This story takes place in Ohio and speaks of Amish in Belize. I enjoyed its cultural references, but the story itself offered some interesting plot lines. It's thoughtfully constructed, with engaging characters and their day to day doings and concerns. This work stands out among Amish 'romance' for its readable, plausible, and above all respectful treatment of Amish families and communities and their ways. I liked it enough to read it twice. A keeper.
This is a gentle, non-dramatic romance. There is a religious message, obviously, but it never gets heavy-handed. Katie and Elam both have pain and doubts and Davids does a good job of conveying them. I did find myself wishing for some additional complexity or twist. It was very predictable.
This truly was a story about redemption. Redemption for all, Katie, Nettie, Elam, and the town of Hope Springs. I enjoyed its steady pace, intensity, and all of the background stories. Katie is a free-willed woman who struggles to find her place in the world, yet hopes to do the best for her child. Elam is a man who always knew what he wanted and who he wanted to be, yet has had his heart broken in more ways than one which makes it hard for him to trust again. Together they make a great pair who lifts one another up to improve themselves.
I recommend this novel to those who are fans of Ms. Davids and/or are looking for a contemporary Amish romance!

Elam Sutter's fiancée had decided to leave the Amish community and Elam after her baptism, and it broke his heart. Now he knows he must protect his heart from Katie, who has chosen the English over their faith, but that’s easier said than done.
This was one of the best Amish novels I'veread in a long time. It rang true to what I know about Amish culture, and there were few if any mistakes. This one was truly a joy to read!
