Killing Malmon: 30 Authors…1 Victim Kindle Edition
Price | New from | Used from |
In 2014, Crimespree Magazine held an internet-based flash fiction contest. The rules were simple: somewhere in the story you had to “Kill Dan Malmon.” That was it. The story had to be brief, inventive, and somewhere, Malmon had to die. Now, thanks to Down & Out Books, those original stories, plus a few more, are being collected into one volume with all proceeds going to the MS Society. If you hate MS as much as we do, and if your feelings towards Dan Malmon are rather ambivalent anyway, then this is the volume for you.
Featuring stories by Hector Acosta, Eric Beetner, Dana Cameron, Sarah M. Chen, Matthew Clemens, Angel Luis Colón, Hilary Davidson, Cory Funk, Danny Gardner, Paul J. Garth, Rob Hart, Ed Kurtz, S.W. Lauden, Russel D. McLean, Jeff Macfee, Erin Mitchell, Erica Ruth Neubauer, Brad Parks, Thomas Pluck, Bryon Quertermous, Todd Robinson, Alex Segura, Jeff Shelby, Nathan Singer, Josh Stallings, Jay Stringer, R.D. Sullivan, Bryan VanMeter, Holly West and Dave White.
Praise for KILLING MALMON:
“I’ve never quite understood why people keep killing off Malmon. But they make a good case. Several cases. Many, many cases—for a good cause! Killing Malmon for fun and non-profit!” —Lori Rader-Day, Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning author of The Day I Died
“You can’t spell marvelously grisly and a funky good time without K-I-L-L-I-N-G M-A-L-M-O-N. Do yourself a favor and dive in.” —Shaun Harris, author of The Hemingway Thief
“Look, I like Dan Malmon, so I feel kinda guilty enjoying the hell out of his many untimely demises. But this collection, which features some of the best crime writers on the planet, is a gonzo pulp confection that hits your system like a sugar high and leaves you smiling the whole way through.” —Chris Holm, Anthony Award-winning author of The Killing Kind and Red Right Hand
“Your mom is going to hate this.” —Kristi Belcamino, author of the Gabriella Giovanni thriller series
“Killing Malmon is an incredibly satisfying crime fiction sampler. Read it. I guarantee you’ll leave with at least three new writers to check out (plus an inexplicable desire to protect and nurture Dan Malmon).” —Jess Lourey, TEDx presenter and Anthony- and Lefty-nominated author of the Witch Hunt thrillers and the Murder by Month mysteries
“Come for the death of Dan Malmon, stay for the super-group of authors letting it all hang out, dropping tasty cut after tasty cut of pure noir.” —Matthew FitzSimmons, author of the Gibson Vaughn series
“Killing Malmon is like Murder on the Orient Express except (spoilers!) it’s not by Agatha Christie, or on a train, or on its way to the Orient. Still, there’s something wonderful and sweet watching thirty talented mystery writers line up to shoot, strangle, poison, dismember, and otherwise spell the demise of the one of the genuinely nicest guys in the business. If you’re into that kind of thing like I am, read Killing Malmon.” —Matthew Iden, author of the Marty Singer mystery series and The Winter Over
“Life sure is hard for you.” —Judy Malmon, Dan’s mom
“I love these stories!” —Diane Hackbarth, Kate’s mom

About the authors
Hilary Davidson was a journalist before she turned to the dark side and started writing crime fiction. Her novels include the Lily Moore series—The Damage Done, The Next One to Fall, and Evil in All Its Disguises—the bestselling Shadows of New York series—One Small Sacrifice and Don’t Look Down—and the standalone novels Blood Always Tells and Her Last Breath.
She is also the author of some fifty short stories; a few of the earliest have been gathered in a collection called The Black Widow Club. Her fiction has won two Anthony Awards, a Derringer Award, and a host of other accolades. Toronto born and raised, she moved to New York City in October 2001 because of her very persuasive husband, Daniel. She is also the author of eighteen nonfiction books.

Don’t let the smile fool you; Holly West has a dark side.
Originally from a small town in Northern California, Holly moved to the big city to attend Loyola Marymount University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Screenwriting. After shoving a few unproduced scripts in the proverbial desk drawer, she succumbed to her baser instincts and turned to writing crime fiction.
She’s the author of the Mistress of Fortune series, set in late 17th century London and featuring amateur sleuth Isabel Wilde, a mistress to King Charles II who secretly makes her living as a fortuneteller. The first in the series, Mistress of Fortune, was published by Harlequin’s Carina Press in February 2014 and was nominated for the Left Coast Crime Rosebud Award for Best First Novel in 2015.
Holly’s short stories appear online and in numerous anthologies, including Feeding Kate: A Crime Fiction Anthology, Needle: A Magazine of Noir, Shotgun Honey Presents: Both Barrels, Protectors 2: Heroes, The Big Book of Jack the Ripper, and Unloaded. Her short fiction has twice been honored with Anthony Award nominations. Her latest story, “The Best Laid Plans,” appears in Florida Happens, the 2018 Bouchercon anthology (September 2018).
Holly’s also the editor of the forthcoming Murder-A-Go-Go’s, a crime fiction anthology inspired by the music of The Go-Go’s. Net proceeds from the collection will benefit Planned Parenthood of America. Murder-A-Go-Go’s will be published by Down and Out Books in March 2019.
Holly lives in Northern California with her husband, Mick, and dogs, Stella and Brando. She’s a member of the Mystery Writers of America, for which she edits the Southern California chapter’s newsletter. She’s also a member of Sisters in Crime and the International Thriller Writers. She’s the television contributor to the bi-weekly Do Some Damage podcast, “7 Minutes With,” hosted by Steve Weddle.
Holly is represented by Elizabeth K. Kracht of Kimberley Cameron & Associates.
“Fiction is the lie I use to tell my truth.” Josh Stallings’ Young Americans, a ‘70’s glam-rock disco heist novel was nominated for both a 2016 Lefty Award and an Anthony Award. His hard boiled Moses McGuire trilogy found itself on over fourteen best of the year lists. His short fiction appears all over the damn place. Born in Los Angeles. Raised in Nor Cali. He now lives and types in the San Jacinto mountains. Surrounded by cedar, pine, and oak forests he spends his days dreaming up nefarious plots, evil crimes, and redemptive tales.

Ed Kurtz is the author of THE RIB FROM WHICH I REMAKE THE WORLD, NAUSEA, ANGEL OF THE ABYSS, THE FORTY-TWO, and A WIND OF KNIVES, as well as numerous short stories. His work has appeared in Needle: A Magazine of Noir, BEAT to a PULP, Shotgun Honey, Thuglit, and several anthologies, including The Best American Mystery Stories 2014. Ed resides in Connecticut.
Dana Cameron's novels and short stories are inspired by her career as an archaeologist. Her crime fiction has won multiple Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Awards, and has been short-listed for the Edgar Award. Several of her Emma Fielding archaeology mysteries have been made into movies for the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel. HELLBENDER is the third urban fantasy novel set in her Fangborn 'verse. Dana lives in Massachusetts, USA; learn more at www.danacameron.com.
Thomas Pluck has slung hash, worked on the docks, trained in martial arts in Japan, and even swept the Guggenheim museum (not as part of a clever heist). He hails from Nutley, New Jersey--home to criminal masterminds Martha Stewart and Richard Blake--but has so far evaded capture. His latest is THE BOY FROM COUNTY HELL, the second Jay Desmarteaux crime thriller, which follows BAD BOY BOOGIE. He also wrote Blade of Dishonor, an action adventure which MysteryPeople called “the Raiders of the Lost Ark of pulp paperbacks.” Joyce Carol Oates calls him “a lovely kitty man.”
You can find him online at www.thomaspluck.com and on twitter as @thomaspluck
Hector Acosta was born in Mexico City and moved to the United States. He spent time in El Paso and Dallas before moving with his understanding wife and dog to New York. His time living on the border left an impression on him, and much of his writing revolves around that area and its people. In his free time he enjoys watching wrestling and satisfying a crippling Lego addiction.
Sarah has worked a variety of odd jobs, from script reader to private investigator assistant. She’s published numerous short stories and a children’s chapter book. Her noir novella, CLEANING UP FINN, with All Due Respect Books, was an Anthony finalist and IPPY Award winner. She’s the co-editor of THE SWAMP KILLERS and THE NIGHT OF THE FLOOD with E.A. Aymar and has written for the Los Angeles Review of Books, Hapa Mag, and P.S. I Love You, among others. Visit her at https://sarahmchen.com.
From his beginnings as a young stand-up comedian (Def Comedy Jam All-Stars vol. 12), Danny Gardner has enjoyed careers as an actor, director, and screenwriter. He is a recent Pushcart Prize nominee for his creative non-fiction piece Forever. In an Instant., published by Literary Orphans Journal. His first short fiction piece, “Labor Day”, appeared in Beat to a Pulp, and his flash fiction has been featured in Out of the Gutter and on Noir On The Air. He is a frequent reader at Noir at the Bar events nationwide. He blogs regularly at 7 Criminal Minds. He is a proud member of the Mystery Writers of America and the International Thriller Writers.
Danny lives in Los Angeles by way of Chicago. A Negro and an Ofay is his first novel.

Dan catches no breaks. Everyone wants him dead for a reason. Two guys argue like wise guys from Goodfellas about how to best kill Dan (Eric Beetner). Dan ends up in a Marvel Comics universe in Josh Stallings’s story, which includes a cameo from crime writer Ms. Christa Faust. In another story that is as surreal as a Coen Brothers movie, our mensch Dan is the unintended victim of the Pogo Stick serial killer (Hilary Davidson). Watch out for Kit Kats! If you have ever suffered in line at Starbucks and heard an absurd order when all you wanted was a simple coffee, you’ll achieve sweet release with Ed Kurtz’s “Nebbish.” Dan the schmuck. Like a Trainspotting or In Bruges dark comic vibe next time Malmon appears on the slab? Angel Luis Colón will introduce you to Blacky Jaguar. Will he or won’t he dodge his fate in Sarah Chen’s “Masterpiece”? We know the answer. Dan is that guy with the red stapler in Office Space in Holly West’s “Money for Nothing.” He gets lucky before he’s unlucky. Want to practice your Spanglish chops before tackling Gabino Iglesias’ Zero Saints, then turn the page with Hector Acosta’s “Rojo Muerte.” Danny Gardner’s “Straight Fire” will tell what it feels like to be the only black guy in Wonderbread Wonderland with a hot new book (he’s the author of A Negro And An Offay), while hankering for an Old Fashioned and ribs until Malmon enters the picture. Dan is the shlimazel who tries to order a pastrami in Thomas Pluck’s “Russian Roulette.”
There is some profanity. All I can say is that 1) a lot of people love this Dan Malmon, even if they want to kill him on the page, and 2) this is a charity anthology that directs proceeds from sales to the National MS Society. I’m also convinced Malmon loves Kit Kats. Last point: the publisher Down & Out Books must believe in keeping it in the family because it’s fast becoming a reputable stable for up and coming talent. Many of these authors have been nominated or won prestigious awards. The anthology concludes with three previews of works from Jack Getze, J.J. Hensley, and Trey R. Baker. They don’t kill Malmon.
