Blog postIn my last two posts, I shared helpful links and educational downloads for the kiddos, but let's face it, it's not just the kids who need entertaining. In fact, after being cloistered with those sweet little angels for days upon days upon...yes, more days, we adults may need distractions of our own. So, in that vein, here are some ways to "connect" with friends and family while we're all social-distancing-together:

Blog postSo, let me start by saying this is not a home improvement blog. Obviously. And my husband and I are not particularly handy. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, there wasn’t anything wrong with our kitchen. See, not that bad:
But because we live in the Pacific NW, where the winters are long…and dreary, our kitchen, with its dark cherry cabinets, brown granite counters, and walnut floors was like a black hole, sucking all the light from the house.

Blog postEven before our cabinets were painted, I knew the counters would be the next thing to go.
We have granite. I say have because it's still there, you just can't actually see the ugly Brazilian Brown anymore, thanks to this product: Stone Coat epoxy.
I know what you’re thinking because I see it on people’s faces every time I tell them what I’ve done, that “you did what to your granite?” look.
That’s right, I covered it with epoxy. And you kn2 years ago Read more -
Blog postOur cabinets were a dark cherry, and they were fine, but I was so over that dark-wood look. Especially since we live in a place that rains nine months out of the year. I wanted my kitchen, at least, to be light and bright.
So, when I told my poor husband I wanted him to paint our kitchen cabinets for my birthday, he didn’t know what he was getting himself into. To be fair, I really didn’t either.

Blog postBack in 2011, I toured with a group of amazing women for the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour. Prior to the tour, Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr came up with the brilliant idea for the authors to contribute to an anthology in order to offset the costs of our tour. The theme for the stories was “road trips.”
At the time, I was still working on the second novel in the Body Finder series, DESIRES OF THE DEAD, and I was getting to know a new character named Rafe. I decided that Rafe n4 years ago Read more -

In the end, all that's left is an Echo.
Before, Violet's morbid ability to sense the dead led her to uncover dark murders and long-buried secrets in her small town. Now that she's working with a special investigative team, Violet hopes she can help even more people—whether by saving a life or catching a killer.
Although she's relieved to finally be honest about what she can do, her instant connection with her mysterious partner, Rafe, is both confusing and unsettling, and their unique bond creates tension with her boyfriend, Jay. When she discovers the body of a college student murdered by "the collector," Violet refuses to give up on the case. With her own relationship on the line, Violet doesn't realize that the serial killer is looking to add to his collection and that she may have caught his eye. Will the life Violet has to save be her own?
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodiesor at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.
Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.
Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murdererand Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.
Dead Silence is the gripping fourth novel in the Body Finder series. With romance, suspense, and unexpected twists, Dead Silence will keep readers guessing until the very last page.
All her life Violet has grappled with her ability to sense the echoes of those who have been murdered and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Now that she has an imprint of her own, Violet's "gift" is intolerable. Torn between her desire to lead a normal life and the pressure from the Center to continue her work tracking down killers, Violet's world starts to unravel . . . and some of her most carefully guarded secrets are exposed.
Then she discovers a gruesome murder scene unlike anything she's ever encountered, and she can't rest until she's silenced the echoes for good. As Violet sets out to find a vicious murderer and his band of devoted followers, she realizes that protecting those closest to her is far more difficult than protecting herself.

The gripping second installment in the Taking trilogy is perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series. Explosive and romantic, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills, The Replaced will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.
Kyra hasn’t been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Now on the run from the NSA, Kyra is forced to hide out with others who, like her, have been Returned. Yet she is determined to find Tyler, the boy she loves who was also abducted…all because of her. When her group intercepts a message that Tyler might still be alive, Kyra risks everything to get him back. But he is being held by a shadowy government organization that experiments on the Returned, and going after him puts the rest of the group in danger. Even if Kyra gets Tyler back, the fight to save him—and the rest of the Returned—is just beginning.
In the violent country of Ludania, the language you speak determines your class, and there are harsh punishments if you forget your place—looking a member of a higher class in the eye can result in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina (Charlie for short) can understand all languages, a dangerous ability she’s been hiding her whole life. The only reprieve from oppression is within the drug-filled underground club scene. There, she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy who speaks a language she’s never heard, and her secret is almost exposed. As the violent clashes between the totalitarian monarchy and the rebel forces escalate, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country’s only chance for freedom from the terrible grip of a deadly regime.
Kimberly Derting, author of The Body Finder series, writes powerfully and movingly of a girl with dangerous powers in an unusual and expertly crafted setting.
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer meets The Fifth Wave in this chilling and explosive new series from author Kimberly Derting.
The last thing Kyra Agnew remembers is a flash of bright light. She awakes to discover that five whole years have passed. Everyone in her life has moved on—her parents divorced, her boyfriend is in college and dating her best friend—but Kyra's still the sixteen-year-old she was when she vanished. She finds herself drawn to Tyler, her boyfriend's kid brother, despite her best efforts to ignore her growing attraction. In order to find out the truth, the two of them decide to retrace her steps from that fateful night. They discover there are others who have been "taken," just like Kyra. Only, Kyra is the first person to have been returned past the forty-eight-hour taken mark. With a determined, secret government agency after her, Kyra desperately tries to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had . . . but what if the life she wants back is not her own?
Charlie, otherwise known as Queen Charlaina of Ludania, has become comfortable as a leader and a ruler. She’s done admirable work to restore Ludania’s broken communications systems with other Queendoms, and she’s mastered the art of ignoring Sabara, the evil former queen whose Essence is alive within Charlie. Or so she thinks.
When the negotiation of a peace agreement with the Queendom of Astonia goes awry, Charlie receives a brutal message that threatens Ludania, and it seems her only option is to sacrifice herself in exchange for Ludanian freedom.
But things aren’t always as they seem. Charlie is walking into a trap—one set by Sabara, who is determined to reclaim the Queendoms at any cost.
It was just a doll…
…just a dream…
Except, Rafe knew the truth.
Before Rafe met body-finding Violet Ambrose and joined her team at the Center, there was another girl. Sophie was everything to Rafe. She was different from any girl he’d ever known. And Sophie was on the run from a dangerous past.
Now, if Rafe can make it to the remote Montana house in time, he might have the chance to save the girl he loves. But to do so means revealing the ability he’s been hiding from everyone, even those closest to him.
Note: This story was originally published in the anthology, Enthralled, edited by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong.
Kimberly Derting is the author of the award-winning The Body Finder series, The Pledge trilogy, and The Taking trilogy. She is also the co-author of the picture books Cece Loves Science and Cece Loves Science and Adventure!
