“I finished it and immediate starting reading again, looking for the clues.”
How does one find a shapeshifter who may not even exist?
The onmyouji Tsurugu no Kiyomori, a practitioner of the mystic arts, has been engaged to protect the warlord's new bride from the fox spirit rumored to be near. Tsurugu and the shadow-warrior Shishio Hitoshi face an impossible challenge in teasing out a kitsune shapeshifter from the samurai and servants –- if such a creature is even present at all.
The handsome mute twin servants belonging to Lady Kaede are certainly suspicious, but it is the beautiful and strong-willed lady herself who draws Shishio’s mistrust. Tsurugu and Shishio must move carefully, for accusing the warlord’s bride falsely would be death. But failing to identify the kitsune to the warlord is equally perilous, and there is more to discover. For an onmyouji knows secrets even the shadows do not….
Kitsune-Tsuki is a historical fiction novelette, the introduction to the series KITSUNE TALES. By reader request it includes a full glossary as well.

I come from a Japanese Studies background so I always reading stories based on Japanese myths with an intention to enjoy-- but also with the fear that the author will have coopted inappropriately or portrayed strangely the myths that I know and love.
No fear here. Baugh does a good job both with presenting a "who is the kitsune" mystery in the context of a nobleman's impending wedding, as well as portraying some cool Onmyouji (shamanic curse worker) chants and rituals.
And, more interestingly for me because I love new takes or new information, there's a shadow wolf character-- a kind of ninja like policeman who searches with the main character, an Onmyouji named Tsurugu--who provides both interest and sense of danger.
There are certainly clues sprinkled throughout the hunt for the kitsune spirit about the twist ending, but I really didn't see it coming until just before it happened, so very delightful to be fooled by a clever fox! I did feel the story ended too early for me, I wanted to spend more time with the main characters. That's my only quibble.
The supernatural world of almost-Japan is vividly brought to life in the kitsune books. Anyone who loves that period, Japan, and its folklore will love these two books.
There is some Japanese folk tale, magic stuff in this book as there would be in most any book that retells a folk tale.
wished the story could have gone on a bit longer though I did like where it ended. It's just...I think there wasn't enough story to be worth the price. Don't get me wrong though, I really did love it and I'll probably read the second one as well.

Now why did this only get 3 of 5 stars... Well, once you get the book you will see that this could hardly be called a book.. It's only about 100 pages 'n those are in a quite small format as well.
At the end of this book you get an entire chapter of part 2, what's a nice add but seems rather odd since it could pretty much just be an outro and part of the story of book 1 .. this way you'll have to skip through various pages in book 2 since you already went over it, so it's too short and the handling of the end of the book with it's preview is overall weird.
It's still worth to read and part 2 comes along in a bigger format with more pages so that's something to look forward to.
