VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 starsReminds me of THE QUEEN’S POISONER
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021
I’ve read every Jeff Wheeler book, a big fan, however his last two “world building” efforts left me a bit underwhelmed. His Victorian Steampunk series started out brilliantly but faded and for the first time ever, couldn’t finish one his books, the last of the Asian inspired series. But this is a return to form! I read it in two sittings. Page turner. The hero Ransom has some psychological depth, a good back story, and one really cares for him. The fight scenes and battles are excellent and exciting. The fitful narrator in this series is Lady Claire and she is delightful and the love story, if you can call is that, is fun when you add the lusty, scheming Naomie and mysterious Cloaked Lady to the mix. Perhaps most appealing to me is that all the characters aren’t just black and white, they are intriguing shades of gray. Returning to Kingfountain yet again could have been a retread of past tales. But I left the book with that fresh feeling I always feel when he is at his best. I wish he would stop releasing his books in thirds or fourths. It robs the reader of the full experience of the tale. If he would release a full sized novel with this kind of quality, he would be favorably measured with The Name Of The Wind or Game of Thrones. I dare him to release something other than his predictably bite sized books! That said, you are surely going to like this book. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 starsDisappointing Bloodbath
Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021
I did not enjoy reading this book for several reasons. First, Ransom begins as an interesting and sympathetic character, but he does not stay that way. His “fountain blessed” superpower is killing and doing battle. The body count and level of violence are both beyond tolerable levels. As much as it is gruesome, it also becomes tedious and uninteresting as he hears the waterfall and enters a killing trance. Second, the characterization is thin. So thin, that the reader does not believe them, care about them, or feel anything about the budding romance. Even the villains are so thinly drawn that they are ineffective. Third, part of the plot remains confusing. The key confusing component is the inconsistent action of a mysterious female character. It is not that it is unresolved (which it is) but that her actions are odd instead of intriguing. Third, the writing style and pacing are uneven. Jeff Wheeler is a very successful author with many titles to his credit and a legion of fans. I respect his success, but we are not on the same wavelength, and I will not be reading more of this series.

I always enjoy Wheeler’s ability to create stories that compel you to be a part of them. The only confusion I have is where, chronologically we are in the story that has other books dedicated to this land. I’d love it if authors made that a little more clear. Sometimes I’ve read the previous books a long time ago, so loose track of the “history”.
Still enjoyable and will continue on the journey with Ransom.

As usual, strong characters with lots of political conflict. Not sure how this story will be stretched to four books but it might become more of an historical story, we will see. Lots of violent action and a tiny bit of romance and angst. Jeff really knows how to write so you hate his vilians and sometimes his heroes too.

If you liked the other Kingsfountain books you will enjoy this one too.

I’m excited to read the rest of this series. Amazing characters, compelling intrigue and plot - just, SO exquisitely good. If Jeff Wheeler wrote a book a month and lived to be a hundred the world would be a far richer place. It already is. Highly recommend!
If you haven’t yet, start with the Wretched of Muirwood trilogy, then follow up with the banished trilogy, then just don’t stop. I could eat these up a book a day.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So many fantasy books today seem simplistic and just go through the motions. This was a complex, well rounded story with a rich plot that drew me in. I actually felt for Ransom and the trials he went through. I read it in two days and the second book will be gone in two days as well, much as I would like to draw it out. I highly recommend it!

What a wonderful book. Great characters you can cheer for and cry over. Talk about the ability to build suspense!! At one point the main character was being lead into a no win situation. I had to put the book down for a while because I was so dreading what was going to happen.
Now excuse me as I’m off to download the next book in the series.

I hadn't read Jeff Wheeler in a while. Mistake! I had forgotten what a master storyteller he is. He builds World and characters that come to life in my mind. Characters that I think about long after the story has ended. Thank you Mister Wheeler for fantasy that I feel good recommending and sharing with my young teenager.

As always Me Wheeler did not disappoint. This is the 2nd series by this author that I have started and it's ALL GOOD! NOT ONE BOOK HAS BEEN A DISAPPOINTMENT! He does a great job building the worlds and the characters. What I will say about this one is that it has many twists and turns! Keeps you hooked to the very last word.

I was happy to be back in Kingfountain again. Jeff’s story telling abilities are fantastic! The characters are well developed. The ploy lines are set well. You can just fall into the story and read until the end.
