Insanity has me by the throat. I wish it’d squeeze a little harder.
They call me crazy, but who are they to judge? I’m not crazy. They are. I’ve tried to reason with them, but they won’t listen. Yet. One day, they will hear me, and one day, they’ll be sorry.
This is no way to live, being locked up like an animal. And I’m surrounded by lunatics. The scary girl in the corner who hears voices, the burly bald guy who lashes out with violent tendencies, the quiet redhead who lights fires, or the Rob Zombie look-alike that is rumored to have murdered his entire family. Is this real or one sick and twisted nightmare I can’t wake up from?
Institutionalized is the latest anthology from the creators of The Better Off Dead series. This installment brings you stories of the mentally unbalanced, the damaged and disturbed, and the criminally insane. Some are locked up. Some are not. We recommend you sleep with one eye open.
With stories by Richard Chizmar, Ronald Kelly, R.E. Sargent, Steven Pajak, Rebecca Rowland, Mike Duke, Scott Harper, Jill Girardi, Richard Clive, Jeremy Megargee, Janine Pipe, LP Hernandez, Scotty Milder, Renee M.P.T. Kray, Brandon Scott, and David Rider.
Foreword written by Brian Asman.
Mother Horror presents:
It began with a forum post titled “My Neighbor Has Been Staring at the Moon for Hours.” Dismissed as a poor attempt at fiction, other accounts soon joined, describing family members and neighbors gazing open-mouthed at the stars throughout the night. As the sun rises, the Stargazers are changed. Some gather in groups, some destroy, and some kill.
The unfolding chaos is familiar for war veteran, now father, Henry Sylva. As the city crumbles from its center, he relies on old instincts to save his family. But the enemy is all around, Stargazers and human monsters alike.
As Henry battles for survival a dwindling online community documents civilization’s end. A new beginning, perhaps, for what is to come.
Don’t read with the lights on…this is My Dark Library.
A collection of novellas curated by Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann to represent her favorite themes, tropes, and subgenres in horror fiction today.
“Stargazers is a transfixing read from start to finish. The mystery is both emotional and frightening as the tension deepens. I can’t wait to read more L.P. Hernandez based on this short tale I could have read more of.” –V. Castro, Author of Queen of the Cicadas and Goddess of Filth
“Stargazers is as tense and eerie as it is entertaining and emotionally gritty. Hernandez masterfully weaves together elements of post-apocalyptic fiction, mystery, and horror into a fast-paced novella that delivers a hell of a punch. This is a literary Creepypasta with lots of heart, and Hernandez is a writer to watch.” –Gabino Iglesias, Author of The Devil Takes You Home and Coyote Songs
Also featuring stories from such talents as Tim Meyer, Nicole Willson, Michael Harris Cohen, Mark Allan Gunnells, L. Marie Wood, R.J. Joseph, Catherine McCarthy, Mark Towse, LP Hernandez, Alex Ebenstein, Alex Woodroe, Michael Kelly, Kenneth W. Cain, and a poem from Shane Douglas Keene.

"The Rat King is a powerful, haunting, original collection of stories that not only unsettles the reader with the visceral horrors that are revealed, but also with the psychological trauma and emotional journeys that each character takes—towards redemption, or vengeance, or looming terror. This is an author to keep an eye on."—Richard Thomas, author of Disintegration and Breaker (Thriller Award, Bram Stoker, and Shirley Jackson nominee)
Bedtime. The twilight of consciousness, the darkness that lies between reality and dreams. Here, on the threshold of slumber, we open the door to myriad dreamscapes, to other worlds and astral planes. A thousand doors to a thousand worlds... and the nightmares that hide within.
Open the door, cross the threshold, and dream the night away. But be careful, and remember:
When you open the door to a realm of nightmares… sometimes you let the nightmares in.
A schoolyard nightmare with a taste for children…
Faceless horrors that prowl the boundary between consciousness and slumber in search of prey…
Houses where dreams and nightmares come to life…
Imaginary friends who bleed into reality…
Old gods who weave webs of nightmares to reveal horrific truths…
A monstrous storyteller who’s just dying to tell a tale about you…
These are just a few of the bedtime stories written by—and for—monsters.
In these pages you’ll find an unforgettable collection of dreams unleashed upon reality and reality transformed into nightmares. Penned by award-winning authors, bestselling writers, and visionary nightmare-smiths, A MONSTER TOLD ME BEDTIME STORIES will remind you what it means to be afraid of the dark.
