It's hard to pick out just a couple, but I liked the writing style of Returning to My Senses by Karen Taylor. This tells movingly of a girl who abandons her usual dining in Manhattan after September eleventh, choosing instead to take turns with her girlfriend to pick a neighbourhood, sampling Russian food, Egyptian, Indian and the many other cultures of their city and reawakening their numbed senses.
Other tales for broadminded adults include a paranormal vampire romance, a wolf shifter romance (once you have been told at the outset that the book includes paranormals, you're starting each story wondering if this is one) and more traditional boy-meets-girl stories. And I enjoyed the style of a boy meets boy story by Adam Carpenter, In A City of Eight Million People, which brings two young people together and then separates them, potentially lost among such a crowd.
This is a short collection, edited by Trinity Blacio and Lori Perkins, and could be read by dipping in on the subway or over lunch break.
