About the author

USA Today bestselling author Emma Prince whisks readers away to another time and place with her steamy historical romances—where the passion is legendary, the adventure never ends, and the happily ever afters are guaranteed!
After several years as a college English instructor (where she savored her “fun books”—usually historical romances—on the side), Emma turned her love of page-turning, richly historical stories into a career. She lives in drizzly Seattle with her husband, their daughter (the wee lass) and a crazy cat named Oban (after the town in Scotland or the whisky made there, depending on who you ask).

The plot and storyline was good and creative but, I struggled with some of the characters and dialogue. I found the heroine’s stead fast resolve to not tell anyone where she had sent her son for safe keeping, great! But, there were many things the main character did that were not believable so it was hard to keep my attention. The main character was King Bruce’s #2 most battle worthy warrior who was sent on a secret mission to keep a woman and her young son safe. He started out as as the ultimate professional warrior and protector who would never waver from the task at hand. But, soon he started berating himself as a barbarian because she was shivering cold and she was saddle sore even though they were literally running for their lives! So, he decided to forgo his survival training and baby her by stopping at an inn to let her rest for a couple days even though he had just fought and killed 12 of 13 assassins and was wounded himself, the day before. I couldn’t take him as a serious warrior or protector after he wanted her.
The Highlanders are not very thrilled by the assignments, in part, because they are being typically assigned to protect English women and children.
In this story, Ansel Sutherland is assigned the job of protecting the illegitimate son of the Earl of Lancaster, a despised Lord who has come to the Bruce attempting on the surface anyway to establish an alliance with the Scots. Ansel sets out for England and the castle of Dunstanburg, near the town of Embleton. Embleton is a newly established town that serves as the home for servants and other workers at the castle, including those masons, carpenters, and others building the castle walls, turrents, and gates.
Ansel is surprised and disappointed when he finds the castle is incomplete and largely unprotected. There is no garrison of warriors or other protections. He realizes he has a huge job to do; later taking on the repair and preparations for completing the castle as well as training people to defend the castle.
The real challenge he faces lies in the secretive and protective Lady Isolda. She refuses to tell Ansel where the child he is to protect is hidden. Only reluctantly does she later reveal that charge to be protected is her and the Earl of Lancaster's son! Later, after an attempt is made on her life by a hired worker, she shares some information with Ansel. The Earl of Lancaster has his eye on the crown of England. He sees England's Edward II as weak and he, Lancaster sees himself as better suited for the crown. However, Robert the Bruce, believing the Earl is sincere has assigned Ansel to protect, John, the Earl's son.
The story has several twists and turns including a change in how Ansel feels about his assignment, John, and Isolda in particular. Ansel learns, among other things, that the Earl is not to be trusted and that his ambitions make life very difficult for Ansel and the charges he must protect. No, I won't give away all of the plot but this is a story well worth reading. Once I started the book I could not put it down!
When he arrives in England, he encounters Lady Isolda, the boy’s mother who will not disclose the location of her son. But when nefarious attackers show up to go after the lady, he must protect her. So he takes her back to the Highlands and, along the way, their attraction for each other builds.
The story is mostly just Isolda and Ansel though as they travel to the Highlands, we do meet a few more characters. And, eventually, her young son, John. It’s a well written tale, which held my interest though I would have liked a bit more description of the environment around them.
If you like Highland romance with a capable Scottish warrior and a protesting English lady traveling north to the Highlands, you will enjoy this one.
I’ve been a fan of stories about Robert the Bruce since I saw Braveheart. Now that I know more about the real history of the man, I’m even more intrigued by story pies about him and his trusted inner circle. This book was well researched so that the story fits well into the historical details. By setting the focus of this series on the lesser known members of the inner circle, there is plenty of room for the author to fill in the blanks with her imagination.
This story was full of danger and plot twists. The main couple have plenty of alone time for their relationship to develop. As they grow closer, secrets are gradually revealed that make for a novel that is highly satisfying as history, suspense and romance.
Another series to follow! Well sleep is overrated, right?

There is the added bonus of more in depth historical information at the end of the book which is, once again, very interesting whilst easy to read.
