About Laer Carroll
Laer Carroll is a retired aerospace engineer. He worked most recently at NASA and Boeing. There Laer worked on many cutting-edge projects. This included the space station, deep-space probes, military and commercial jets, UAVs, and other projects once science fiction. So it was natural when he retired he thought to become a professional sci-fi writer.
But Boeing sent him to Montreal for a week to liase with a customer during the first snowfall of the year. He stayed downtown in a turn-of-the-century renovated hotel. It was amidst a massive renovation of tall buildings, some of them near skeletons. The gently swirling snowflakes lent a mist of unreality to everything. At night, returning from dancing the Argentine tango or dining out where everyone spoke French, he might have been in a fairy city of the past or a time-devastated future city.
Mid week, in the middle of the night, he awoke in his fin de siecle room wound in his bed sheets. But in the dark he was a she in mid-1800s Ireland. Her name was ... Mary ... McCarthy. And she was in her grave.
So began the birth of the alternative history Shapechanger Tales series.

Blog postI am a few chapters away from the end of my book #14. It is a sequel to THE SPACE ORPHAN trilogy. The main character is ex-Space-Force Major astronaut Felicia Romero.
She is bisexual and is trying to persuade her lady love Annika to be chief architect of Atlantis, a New-Zealand-sized Pacific island halfway between Kiwi Land and Chile.
One of the perqs (and needs) of the job is her private spaceplane. It is about the size of a bizjet. Here is a translucent side view showing a g3 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postI just watched for the umpteenth time “Carrie Pilby” starring Bel Powley. Watching her face is a fascinating process; she reveals her feelings so clearly yet so subtly.
The action takes place from just before Thanksgiving through Christmas to New Year’s Eve. In that time Carrie journeys from blahness to happiness while meeting interesting characters, including one cad (who meets his just deserts, I’m glad to say).

Blog postI’m 60% of the way through the sequel to The Space Orphan trilogy. I still have NO idea how to end it, but that’s usual for the way I write.
I start with an interesting situation and discover the story as I write. It’s like jumping off a cliff and expecting to fly. It’s a risky process but it has worked for 13 books and as many shorter works so far. Happily, all of them are still earning money, even the very first book.

Blog postI think my book The Star Woman would make a great limited-run series on Netflix or the like. The ten chapters of the book could be shown as ten episodes.
Who would play Karen Danburn, the heroine of my book? I wrote it as my version of Supergirl, AKA Kara Danvers. In the comics and the TV show she is portrayed as a blond White girl. I showed her this way on the cover of my book. But I’d love it to be Rihanna who impressed me in the movie Battleship.

Elizabeth Bennet: Shapechanger tries to answer the question: If Elizabeth Bennet had become an immortal shapechanger before meeting Fitzwilliam Darcy, how would the events of Pride and Prejudice be different, how the same?
She starts two businesses. One is planned to bloom into a media empire, helped by her two closest friends and numerous others. The other is a security firm which protects Garden City businesses, some of which have branches in all the surrounding areas.
One comes back with the news that two mules loaded with goods have been hijacked on their inbound journey. She and three helpers set out to find and recover the merchandise. What they get are much more than what they expected.
Along the way she discovers that the Earth system has surprises. Such that once Cats, those blue-furred six-limbed near centaurs, lived in the asteroids. And even on Mars.
Further, she will find that Earth is known to the inhabitants of other systems. Including the friendly green-skinned humanoids the Lizards. And the not-so-friendly grey-skinned Frogs, some of whom are lurking in the Kuiper Belt.
Can Earth protect itself from the Frogs? Jane Kuznetsov is determined to make it so.
At first she disbelieves the accounts but gradually decides they are true, or a reflection of the truth. A deadly warrior and an experienced business woman, Atena has become bored where she lives. She decides to travel to the city to see what marvels and opportunities exist there.
She knows the journey will be long and sometimes dangerous but sets out anyway. Arriving at the marvel she finds that she now has a different kind of journey to pursue: becoming a citizen of the wonderful city.
In the hospital and later in an orphanage her intelligence was found to be so high it could not be measured. She liked people and made friends easily. She was also incredibly agile and tough.
She was adopted by a professor and his retired school-principal wife. She liked them and was happy. But sometimes she'd look up at the night-time sky and think she must have come from there. And she decided she must return there.
This story is about how she did it.
