Jodie Comer is spellbinding in this tale of betrayal and vengeance set in 14th century France from visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott. Based on actual events, the film stars Matt Damon and Adam Driver as friends Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two knights who must fight to the death after de Carrouges’s wife (Comer) accuses Le Gris of assault.

Whhaatt - why the initial low reviews? Grade-A Period Piece my friends
Verified purchase
Okay, I would definitely base my opinion on the Google / Rotten Tomato reviews already collected - that is a better representation of the quality of this film. I was going to watch this movie regardless of reviews simply because I can't get enough period pieces and, well, Adam Driver - say no more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film - I'm not sure if the Amazon reviewers so far just don't appreciate the genre and were drawn because of the all-star cast, but hey, period pieces aren't to everyone's taste. But please don't let that dissuade you from enjoying this film if you do. They do a great perspective shift throughout the movie - where even though you're getting a recounting of the events from Jean, Jacques, and Marguerite they're all very engaging and not at all repetitive.

I really liked the environment the crew created - the fight scenes were not at all drawn out and were engaging, in addition, to contributing to solid character development. And oh my gosh, I did not anticipate how much I would enjoy Ben Affleck in this! I adore the blonde hair, haha, so well cast/portrayed. And Matt Damon - very versatile role throughout the film; again as the perspectives change - so does he. He did very well in embodying all those representations. I really enjoyed Jodie Comer (Marguerite) in The White Princess - and she did not disappoint here either. Very well acted - and I empathized with her character.

And the ending - it was great! Definitely worth your time guys! I enjoyed this film while soaking with a Lush bath bomb, a glass of wine, and candlelight - it was marvelous! For your endeavor, I would recommend dropping the popcorn and going with a meat, cheese, and cracker tray ;) really sets the mood lol.

Ridley Scott is AMAZING

I don't understand why this movie performed badly at the box office, THIS MOVIE IS GREAT. I love historical dramas that are accurate to the time. Some parts don't have a ton of action, so for you meatheads that complain about that, go watch Rambo or something.

Despite the deep A-list line up, I still had a bad feeling about this movie. Matt Damon is a fine actor, in certain roles, but as a 14th Century FRENCH nobleman? Speaking in American English? I have to say, I overstepped the warning tape, and spent 5 bucks on this utter waste of time and money. And it's not cheaply made! Every scene is dropping in realism, but they whole movie looks and feels like it was described on a 3x5" note card. Was there even a script. You can almost hear the director going...ok we got that done. What's next? turn to Adam, and say, "You saved my life...we are now friends". Ok hammered that scene into the dirt! Let's move on! It's the most wooded, badly acted, TERRIBLY directed, and poorly written piece of tripe I've seen in ages. I simply do not understand what anyone was thinking. Ridley Scott must have had a stroke or something, this doesn't look or feel anything like the Glory of Gladiator! I mean, it feels like the whole cast was kidnapped and forced to make a movie for ransom money. Baffeled that so many YES men in Hollywood wouldn't stop the production upon seeing the dailys and ask Mr Scott..."So literally you have each chapter in the story as a single or sometimes two cuts. So we establish a romantic relationship in a since scene?" How is that even possible?? I turned it off after the movie flashed back to a scene we have already seen, and replayed it almost to a Tee...and then went off on a new plot line of why the friend had "raped" Matt's wife...which is a term they surely never used in the 14th century. Oh god...I can't go on...too pointless. Horrible. Not bad enough to be laughably bad, just made me angry and angry enough to write this review and hope to get some money back. SHocking.

I don't even know where to begin other why in the world Damien and Affleck thought they could write, direct, and star in this period piece set in medieval France? At the very beginning, when a British guy is announcing the start of the dual...they you've got this weird mix of American and British accents, with an odd actual French accent by person where that's their ONLY line.
There was zero chemistry between any of the cast...because again, Matt Damien and Ben Affleck have no business adapting this VERY FRENCH story based on a true story. If you know Jodie Comer in Killing Eve and all the other British series she's done, she's very talented, but even here, there's only so much she can do. I didn't realize until after the movie that Damien and Affleck also wrote and directed, which explained a lot. I wanted to like this movie as much as I enjoyed the book but it was so disappointing and frankly should not have been made with a largely American cast who are better suited playing anything else.
And why all of the purely gratuitous and entirely cheesy orgy scenes? Why? WHY?

They managed to take some modern day drivel and weave it into a movie set in an early French backdrop with a stale plot and A list actors whose fame didn't stop this train wreck from being made

Ignore the silly Half helmet, this movie is top shelf!
Verified purchase
Did not watch this movie in theater because the not historically half helmet used (heavily in the advertisement for this movie) looked super annoying...and I thought if they get that so wrong everything else will probably be silly (Like Scott's awful Exodus movie)
In my humble opinion this is his best movie since Gladiator. Very much captures the spirit/culture of the time. Some people have read to much into the politics of modern times with this movie(it is not about that). Acting from the great cast was all top notch. Minus the silly helmet(still annoys me a little) A+ 5/5
I wish there would be more historical epics like this, shame this did not do well in the theaters.

No idea how this film flopped in Theatres...Excellent!
Verified purchase
I saw it first weekend in the Theatre and have been waiting for it to come out on streaming to watch it again. Even better the 2nd time. Excellent performances from Driver and Comer and very good from Damon who you get to catch in a midevil style mullet and Ben Affleck doesn't disappoint either. This is an absolutely savage tale told in 3 perspectives and all are brutal... so make sure your kids are nowhere around while watching it. The story is true and the way Ridley Scott presents it is highly entertaining. It also leaves an impact on you after. No idea how it was called a flop in the theatres and perhaps it should have just been released theatre and home streaming. Only explanation I can think of as it was one of my favorite films of the year and people might just not have been ready to go out to the theaters to see it.

Finally, FINALLY...a movie worth watching. Finally, FINALLY, an 'actual' movie with an actual story and incredible production quality. It has been so long since an actually good movie has come out that I seem to have forgotten what it felt like to actually watch a great and well made movie. It is so refreshing to have watched a movie that isn't all about one explosion after another, no drug dealers or criminals portrayed as hero's, no glorification of degeneracy, no plastering of agenda after agenda, just a bona fide great movie experience. This movie is immersive, and meticulously crafted. It shall one day be viewed as one of the all time greatest period movies ever made. Matt Damon did an excellent job portraying this very gruff, very brave man. I can't emphasize enough how refreshing it was to actually watch a TRUE movie like movies used to be made : with no garbage or special effects or gratuitous sex or anything else that nearly all today's movies are jam packed with. Most movies today are pure garbage. This one is a gem. I will buy it in fact, and I in fact already purchased the soundtrack...which is beautifully done.
