It was hard for me to believe that JoJo Moyes was the author of this book. “Me Before You” was one of my favorite books of all time, and I also loved “The Giver of Stars,” and (to a lesser degree), “After You.” Through the first half of “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” I struggled mightily with whether I could even continue and would not have done so if it had not been my neighborhood book group’s selection for the month. Initially it felt like some petty trashy romance novel to me. It did become more substantial as the love story progressed, but still, having quick sex in the cloakroom of a restaurant? Really? Early on I wasn’t the least bit interested in Jennifer’s life or the lives of her insipid “friends” and husband. But I should add that many of the women in my book group, all of whom are educated and extensive readers, looked more positively on this book than did I (though not a one loved it). We all did care about the outcome of Jennifer and Boot’s love story, but it did take an excessive number of coincidences to unwind.

I still look upon JoJo Moyes as a very gifted writer; clever, intuitive, insightful, and in touch with every human emotion imaginable. So I have to believe that this book was just an unfortunate blip in her production of stories. I will look forward to other gems coming up and still plan to read “The Ship of Brides” and some of her other books. And if by chance you have not yet read “Me Before You,” please do so. You will laugh, cry, etc etc with Louisa, one of the most fantastic characters I’ve ever encountered in a book. And the movie made (based on the book) was also surprisingly really lovely!

This book tugged so much at my heart. However, I must say Ellie annoyed me. Not just the lack of morality, but her stupidity. I did not feel sorry for her one bit. It should not have taken Johns’ wife to appear for her to finally get a grip. Her, “why should I care about his wife,” attitude said so much about her character. The distinct difference in values from the 60’s and now are written in these pages and I loved every bit of it. Jennifer and Anthony’s story totally tugged at my heart. I also really liked Yvonne. She was a good friend for sure. Although she cut ties with Jennifer, it was understandable. She couldn’t possibly understand the depth of the situation especially during the times they were living in.
The movie was not good in comparison to the book.

It's official: I am a Jojo Moyes' newest ardent fan. The first novel of hers that I read was 'Me before you' and I loved it. I was gutted by it, but I loved it. It stayed with me long after I put it down. And this novel has done the same. I stayed up way too late because I could not stop reading it, and the ending came way too soon. Moyes writes such vivid characters - they leap off the page and get under your skin, and you feel like you know them a little at the end. There are two stories here, interweaving and forty years apart. One is Ellie's story - a young writer working for a top newspaper, coming undone a little as a doomed affair with a married man begins unraveling and she finds herself unable to let go, or move on without him. Looking for something else in the archives she stumbles across a letter, written from a man to his lover in 1960, and she is drawn into their story - or what their story seems to be. The letter speaks of him waiting for her to run away with him. Ellie wonders if she did. As she wonders Moyes takes us back to 1960, to Jennifer Stirling, waking up in hospital after a traumatic car accident with little memory about either the accident or her life before it. As she tries to find her life and her memories again she chances across a letter, hidden in a novel. It's a love letter, passionate and powerful, and she begins to remember the man who wrote it, and their love affair. A passionate and tormented love story unfolds through letters and the events that brought Jennifer and Anthony together, and this story is brought into the present day, to Ellie and the letters she has found, from Anthony to Jennifer. Their story resonates with Ellie because she too is caught up in her own tormented affair, and she finds herself wanting to know what happened to them, perhaps as a way of looking into the future and seeing an end to her own story. The ending isn't quite what she expects, for herself or for Anthony and Jennifer, but then, the best endings are perhaps not always the ones we expect, and life has a funny way of working out. I really enjoyed the movement between the two stories, and the way they wove together. The love letters are so beautifully written - I don't know anyone who would not want to receive at least one letter like that. Unlike 'Me before you' I was not gutted by this story. I was moved and swept up and transported to London and the Riviera and into the lives of these characters, and that, for me, is the mark of an excellent storyteller. I'm downloading the next book now.

After watching The Notebook I’ve steered clear of books about old people and romance. Not because they’re bad but because it warms my heart so much I’m a mess for days after. I obviously didn’t read the description for this well enough; I saw Jojo Moyes and jumped right in.

I won’t spoil the plot on here but I will say that if it’s a tear jerker you’re after, you’ll get it with this book. It spans the decades and there’s tons of anticipation throughout. I couldn’t stop reading once I’d started and cried buckets at the end.

Firstly I have read a lot of books of this genre. I struggled at first to get to grips with the characters and timehops (but that’s probably because I have two young children and manage to read a paragraph a night before falling asleep!) but once I got going I just couldn’t stop.
I looked forward to reading this book every night and hesitated every time I thought of putting it down and going to sleep it was just so good. I haven’t had that in a very long time!
I adored the story, the 60s flashbacks. It was so well written like picking up and a warm hug every night but not in the least bit cheesy or cliches like a lot of books of this ilk.
Would recommend to anyone and wish so much I’d bought it on paperback so I could lend it to anyone I could think of!
So sad to have finished it but will no doubt read again one day.

I hardly ever read books on romance but this one caught my eye and I'm so glad it did.
If you're a fan of The Notebook' you'll love this. It's a tale of true love, set in the 1960's. Romance blossoms between married Jennifer and Anthony (Boot) but their union seems to be cursed. Some higher power is determined to set them on separate paths.
The story jumps back to present day and journalist Ellie who's love life is far from perfect. Ellie finds some letters written by Boot to Jennifer and becomes immersed in their relationship and how much love there seemed to be between the couple.
It's beautifully written and I'm sure the film will be amazing. I can't wait to watch it, if its half as good as the book it's going to be great!
