The War Begins…
The world of Ruin erupts into the flames of war as a great evil rises once more from the Tombs of Eternal Midnight. Werewolves and vampires march from the east, the orcs of Umnoth are on the move, and cities disappear beneath the boots of these savage hordes. Kingdoms field desperate armies in a last desperate bid to stop the tides of darkness, but the truth is clear.
The hour of final ruin has come.
Yet the wizard Vandahar has one more card to play: Rangers. Allied with elves and dwarves, they set out to strike at the very heart of the evil Lich Pharaoh’s domain by attacking from a wholly unexpected direction.
Survival. Asymmetrical warfare. Total surprise. This is what the Rangers do best.
But first they must survive the Citadel.
What the forces of evil have started, the Rangers will finish!

First of all this series was always very, very similar to "The Black Company". Now it has followed almost too close as our narrator has disappeared just like Croaker in "The Black Company".
Secondly, this installment of the series was too short and very dis-jointed. Barely over 200 pages isn't even a novel. Sort of seemed like the authors need to make a car payment.
Thirdly, the story was kind of jumbled up with Talker going off on tangents a lot and then having the big explanation of what happened at the Purple Abyss happen just before the big fight really broke the action.
However! It is still carrying on a good story and I will get the next book when it comes out. Based upon the revealed title of the next book and the lack of "smell" of the dead by Tanner at the end of this volume, I believe that we might see our narrator and Sgt. Joe again. Plus, I understood (maybe a little too well) the whole thing that happened to Talker in the Purple Abyss. Young, heartsick, and lonesome sailors are not immune to what afflicted Talker there. Its an old story to everyone but them. Keep writing guys and put your backs into for the next book! We will be waiting.
I read books 3 & 4 one after the other and in my opinion, that matters to very few, book 4 was 10/10. Knocked it out of the park. The fact these 3 bros nailed the Army vernacular (fancy word for not dicking up all the weapons, tactics and even ammo terminology), makes these 3 brothers a definite cut above the best, and their portrayal of the SEAL was pure serendipitous joy. Spot on and exactly like I would have played it. Perfect.
However I do get case of the ass the size of a pallet of 40 Mike Mike when I get so into a book and then BOOOOOOM!!!! It ends. Yeah I’m Army but I know books do eventfully have to end, but the ones that keep me engaged and laughing and remembering my own similar experiences (not in the future in case you were wondering) made me want to keep reading. Now that I’m updating this review to remove the accidental use of the word “naked”, Rangers - next time if you’re gonna have CPT Knifehand issue an OPORD, of the magnitude that he and SGM Stone pushed out, at least complete the execution phase of said OPORD and complete the mission!! Y’all best be working on Book 5 or you’re gonna be seeing green eyes in the middle of the night!!!!
Well done brothers!
Talker, the "writer" of their, the Rangers, life in this future time period they will never return from, tells a page turning account of how the Rangers lay the hate on evil they have never dreamed of seeing, let alone actually fighting against!
I highly recommend delving into this series and have your brain shaken by a true Science Fiction like none I have ever read before!!
I am angry the next one is not out yet. I could never get into reading comics because I hated waiting until the next month to read the next one. This is so much worse. Talker, Tanner, Thor, Rapp and Knife Hand are all characters I just want to keep reading about all the time. Now I am hooked and have to wait months for the next installment.
If you like military sci-fi, fantasy, or even underdog stories then you will enjoy this series. Hell, even if you like the Game of Thrones tv show but couldn't make it through the first book because of the pace or the thousand different characters, this series is for you. Just buy the book and read it. You will like it.
I get it the first time I'm told. Telling me four or more time in slightly different words just pisses me off. Also temps me to flip pages. Were one or more of the authors instructors? That would explain it. (E1-E7, O1-O5 26 yrs USN)
Didn't care for the SEAL character much. Should have been USAF.

I always find they start off slow that might just be me tho, and by the end I. Wanting more. I love this series.

If I was going to complain about anything it's that the books always leave me wanting more. :)
