A true piece of Art, Amazing Actors, Amazing Music and Landscapes
Verified purchase
What not to love in this movie? I read a lot of critics saying that this film was so cliche and kind of cheesy. I think that even if the romance is not the most original ever, the actors are all amazing! Even the ones who have a small part, they are incredible! All of them. It makes us love Ireland and the Irish people, we want to meet them, the landscapes are to die for. Listen to the music, all the musics, they are Art, especially on the images. Everything is right in this movie. Notice how each scene leads to the other. Sometimes the main actors don’t need to say a word, everything is in their eyes. To finish, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode are so beautiful and so true to their characters. I regret we don’t have more films like that! I learned a lot about the Irish language thanks to this film. It is full of kindness, tenderness and so funny moments, I laughed a lot! And who cares if Matthew Goode doesn’t have the perfect Irish accent, we believe him anyway. I certainly recommend this film. If the world could be like this film, we would live in a better world. All is attaching in it. I can’t stop watching it and chiefly listening to the wonderful Music. Just one last thing: look at the paintings, the murals, so inspiring, so appropriate.

LEAP YEAR is a delightful comedy which beautifully captures two completely mismatched individuals amid the incredible scenery of Ireland. We had enjoyed the movie for its simplicity and beauty before our visit to Ireland, but it took on deeper significance after we had traveled through the country and seen the filming sites. Several reviews were severe on the predictable plot and characterizations, but we found Amy Adams and Matthew Goode endearing and their humorous conflicts moved the story to its satisfying conclusion. We watch the movie over an over again.

This movie is a walking cliche and yes....it has been done a million times over but yet there is something so intensely sweet and charming about this film that I just keep watching it. It might be the lush and gorgeous scenery of Ireland, it might be the ever goofy and charming Amy Adams who isn't afraid to laugh at herself. It could very well be the subtly handsome Matthew Goode with his adorable accent and his incredible body language acting skills. It might even be the silly and predictable script that feels fresh some how. I cannot put my finger on it but it is clean, fun comedy. If you go into it wanting a sweet romcom and not an Academy award winning heady movie them you will enjoy it. An extra bonus is that you can have it on with your children running around and you absolutely have nothing to worry about. Don't listen to the haters on this one. It is a blast.

Great movie for Leap Day virtual chick flick with friends near and far
Verified purchase
I adore this movie. It is clever, reveals character of both main character's hearts in a subtle way, and has several amusing parts that keep it moving forward. The scenery of Ireland and getting to see Amy Adams and Matthew Goode act in this movie made it all the more appealing. I purchased over a dozen of this movie, and tied it together with a green frog-shaped cardstock 'invitation' for a virtual movie party on Leap Year Day, included with a green-wrapped ginger ChocoLove chocolate bar and mailed these super fun 'green leap day' packages to out of state friends and family. The idea was to gather their friends together on Leap Year Day to watch this fun chick flick together as a hostess, decorate in green with a few snacks and decor to match the theme cover of the movie and the 'holiday', and then text me a photo of your group/party sometime during their party to me. I enjoyed seeing what everyone did to celebrate Leap Year Day with my created idea of a virtual Leap Year day movie. Super great movie, plus the title, plus to watch it on actual Leap Day every 4 years with your friends included in a party you host on your side of the country was super fun. Since it is available on Amazon Prime for rent for cheap, this year the invites will be sent 'virtually' via text to those further away, and inviting a group of my own to view this movie together on Leap Day (2/29/2020 is on a Saturday) and enjoy green snacks and wonderful fellowship. My new group has not seen the movie, so all the more fun.

This movie is as predictable as the old coin toss con. And it is the best con you will ever fall for!

Yeah, we knew the ending, but the tour we take to get there is fun, funny, one hankie, and to die for scenery. Enjoyable.

Actually, the two really did love each other. They really were going to get married at some point. Makes it more intriguing. Nice guy, good job, sweet personality. He isn't egotistic, he has a life-or-death on-call job and she knows it and is willing to live with it. She has a top-notch job, is her own woman, and he is willing to live with it.

There lies the catch. Who are you really marrying? You think you know everything about your lover but could there be something you don't even realize? If you hadn't seen something else, would you have lived happily ever after without ever knowing it...or seeing it...or having thought about it? Yes, it happens all the time.

But what if someone asks you one obtuse question that skews the whole thing? This movie shows that. It involves a fire alarm. You'll see. And you SHOULD see!

All that runs between the beginning and ending is just icing on the cake. And tasty icing it is...from silly happenstance to gorgeous scenery. A delightful movie to be enjoyed by all.

I need to go to Ireland...

Think I may start every review as "not an Oscar contender" which is a good reason to watch in my opinion. I no longer care what Hollywood thinks is great ... seldom agree.

Anyway, based on various things I read in reviews months ago, I didn't watch. Today, I came back to the movie again, watched the trailer and decided to go for it. I visited Scotland and Ireland for the first time in October 2019 and now can't get enough of either country. Anyway, I figured at the very least I would be treated to beautiful scenery and I was right.

Ireland is one of the lead characters in this movie. However, the scenery was not the least of it. I will qualify the rest of my review by adding I am a big fan of Hallmark movies. So, I liked the story and Amy and Matthew, to say nothing of the whole colorful cast, did a great job with the acting. Somewhere I read a reviewer being highly critical of Matthew's Irish accent. He sounded Irish to me and I was impressed by how much so since I've seen him in the Good Wife as an American and in Downtown Abby as English. For me the chemistry between Amy and Matthew felt very real and one scene even did a fantastic job of portraying intense, but unrealized passion. I always enjoy believable playfulness between characters and this movie had it spread through a number of characters. There's even a good, thought provoking point about making a life changing decision.

Was certainly not disappointed with the locations. I did pay to rent it and will most likely watch again before my rental expires ... always a good sign for me. It is an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, for ladies probably or guys who enjoy rom coms and Ireland. Definitely recommend.

Entertaining Romantic Comedy!
Verified purchase
The film is predictable, not original, accents flawed, some regional stereotypes and then some etc. Forget the critics!! If the goal of the film is to entertain, that was accomplished to the nth degree in my humble opinion. I love this movie warts and all. It is a Romantic Comedy with a serious side. The actors are superb and very believable in the characters they portray. Emotions are conveyed without words - facial expressions and body language say it all. A lot of common sense wisdom and humor is sprinkled within the dialogue. The presentation of the Irish landscape is gorgeous, and the people are friendly and accommodating. It's a GREAT movie. What is there not to like?

A rare film about an intelligent and strong-willed young woman who knows what she wants ...
Verified purchase
A rare film about an intelligent and strong-willed young woman who knows what she wants and pursues it will all her heart and mind -- despite it being considered an inappropriate goal by the standards of her culture. The people are recognizably those in the real world, unlike the odd paper cut outs that people most films. They fumble along, just like you and I do. Funny and warm, it's one of the best in the long tradition of romantic comedies.

Amy Adams is one of the best actresses of our time, and she carries the story with her expressive face and body language.

Also -- if you don't have one, buy a blu ray DVD player. The difference in the image quality is amazing! Mine cost only $50, and was well worth it. Especially in a film this, with its close-ups of the people and long-shots of the wonderful Irish scenery.
