I thought I was pretty good at Excel since I was always the go-to person at work for how-to in Excel...however, I already picked up a number of new skills. While I was familiar with most of the concepts, I had never taken time to really fully leverage all of the capabilities available. Each lesson is doable in less than five minutes, so i just keep the book on my desk and when I have a few spare moments and need a nice little diversion 'treat', I'll work on one. The samples are excellent (they always work exactly as described). I don't actually save my work, i just finish, close and then when ready to do the next lesson, I just open the spreadsheet they have conveniently provided for each lesson. The tips and notes are excellent. This book is WELL worth the money! I am buying the basic book for folks on my team.

1) Each lesson is short. This makes each concept rememberable and immediately 'absorbable.'
2) There appears to be some forethought into the presentation and order to each lesson so that each lesson builds upon the recent ones.
3) The author provides very complete examples for each lesson. They are not simply a few pieces of data thrown together in order to have some sheet to demonstrate the concepts. There is obviously some effort into creating good example workbooks to present the ideas. I followed along, pause the lesson, and do each click and entry.
4) From beginning to end, there is a lot of material. Not just a quick overview. The author provides the customer with a true opportunity to gain a set of complete skills for use in the job market.
5) The product is very affordable. I hesitate to provide this bit of information at the risk of having Michael think to increase the cost. I hope he's a filthy rich fellow with nothing to do but to amuse himself putting together Excel lessons

I can confidently say that after completing Mike Smart's complete course on Excel 2007, using the Smart Method , I am an expert on excel. To be fair I will say that this book doesn't cover all the functions available in Excel, but the author describes the most important function that you may want to use. And to be honest you would need a very thick book to cover all the functions in excel. What the author does in this book, he introduces you to excel, you can navigate through the ribbon menu very fast, and it doesn't look like a bunch of features combined into a menu, but everything becomes organized. The author introduces some features of excel, that 99% of the users don't even know they can do such things with excel. After completing this course (both books, the "Essential Skills" and the "Expert Skills") I wanted to buy a book on VBA and Access 2007. Unfortunately Mike Smart is currently working on those books, but they are not ready yet. By the way, I contacted the author to ask him about VBA and Access, he replied within 5 minutes. This shows that he truly cares about his book and wants to make sure that people who buy it are satisfied. I am sure that if you buy this book, you will be satisfied. I personally would recommend buying the Essential Skills book before purchasing the Expert Skills book. 50% of the information in the Essential Skills book may be familiar to many users, but believe it or not there are a lot of great things in that book. You will be able to create professional looking worksheets, after that you are ready to tackle the Expert Skills book to take your knowledge to a very high level.

I was really interested in the 2nd level book but thought I might as well go thru the beginning one for some good tips. It does contain a lot of stuff I knew but also lots of helpful things that speed me up that I didn't know. I like the layout. Very clear, simple and to the point. Lots of visual aids to make the point. One page per idea. This made it easy to work thru at a fast rate. Slower for those just beginning. I would recommend it highly. Haven't moved on to the second level yet. It does take time and you forget things unless you start using them right away.

Every single lesson is completable within 5 minutes, which makes it perfect to either learn or review quickly. Would super recommend to those looking for a book to learn many advanced Excel techniques! Will definitely keep with me throughout my career.

I especially appreciate the cross references to the skills taught elsewhere in the book -- I know i learned something but forgot the details i need and so i can quickly find the reference and re-learn the skill to go on to the next level. Memory is associative, as the author points out, and so the lessons build on previous ones, making it easier to recall the possibilities of the marvelous software of Excel. To say this is an "in-depth" review of Excel is putting it mildly! You will need to put aside some serious time to go through this book, page by page. Even topics i thought i knew, i learned more by doing this. In the case of this training, the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts

A great way to improve your skills

I have got plenty of benefit from this book. I had already completed the Essential Skills book in the same series about 6 months ago, but am a novice to more advanced Excel 2007 functions.

I so like the way the learning is divided up into bite sized portions. Each learning point fits onto 2 facing A4 pages, so there is never too much to take in. All the learning is done using examples, so you learn by doing, rather than reading which works really well for me.

The book is then divided up into 8 major topics. At the end of every major topic there is a short self test so you can check your progress and make sure you have learnt all the key points from that section. I used these too as a way to re-enforce my learning, so as I completed each section, I not only did that test but went back and did the previous one to make sure I was holding onto what I had learnt.

Overall there are lots of hints and tips in the book. Clearly it's a `technical' book, but the style is very friendly and approachable (this is not a book just for geeks). There are plenty of `ahhhhh' moments, when you discover a quick way to do something that has taken you ages to complete in the past, or suddenly have your eyes opened to something Excel is capable of that you never knew before.

There is no way I think I will retain all the learning in the book. But it has opened my eyes to what's possible and I will keep it close at hand as its bite sized learning format will make it very easy in the future to go back to, if I need to be reminded how to carry out a particular task.

Overall I think this is well worth buying if you are new to more advanced Excel 2007 functions or want a refresher. I would be very surprised if anyone works through this book and doesn't find at least one thing they can use to make them more efficient or effective in the future that more than justifies the cost.

This beautifully crafted book has given me enormous insight into the subtle workings of Excel 2007.It is so well put together in eight sessions.You download the specific exercises from the Smart website as part of the price.If you are unclear on anything, you just keep going through, the session until it falls into place.Once you completed the session you can then try the exercises.This is the best way to learn from the session rather than go onto the next chapter.I had never used pivot tables or macros before and now I have the confidence to use in my work as a financial consultant. My small business clients are mesmerised by how quickly I can analyse data exported to excel. One of them is a model agency and in no time the pivot table analysed the model, by size, by client, revenue and cost and gender.

I recommend Mike Smart's course to anyone who wants to make greater use of excel and apply it to business problems.You do not have to use all 348 functions that excel has but you can certainly analyse data quickly and efficiently using some of the more common formulas.

I have legitimately never reviewed a purchased book before, but felt that I had to add a positive review for this product.

As suggested in the description, this book is not for beginners, but most should be able to pick it up from an intermediate level, or a skilled level in versions prior to Excel 2007. Even when less advanced subjects are revised in this book, the little hints and tips are huge time-savers so it is worth going through the exercises anyway.

But really, the standout of this book is the session / lesson structure. With bite-sized chunks of information and practical exercises, the lessons are easy to digest and formatted in a way much more conducive to learning than any other book I have read on the subject. The slow, gradual feed (and constant reinforcement of) skills also (in my opinion) are excellent for knowledge retention, and I would be surprised if readers do not find themselves acing every end of session exercise.

I bought this book to brush up in a few areas, with the full knowledge that I would have a good knowledge of the majority of topics covered. Whilst this was true, I was pleasantly surprised to find tidbits spread throughout all topics covered that were new to me and extremely useful.
