A really awesome read made even better with the audio book. Lance and his crew take on drill instructors, get captured and escape their captors, deal with aliens, graduate from the academy, and they do it all in style! The ending hit me like a "dwarven uppercut" but you'll have to read the book/buy the audio book to get the reference. Clever, Ross. Very clever. I'm sure Dexter would disagree!

If you don't give this one a try, you will have missed out on an adventure that actually feels like it includes you. So, go on and give it a try. You'll really enjoy this one as much as I did 😀

The writing is intense. The characters are very personable and easy to root for. The story Is a war story and follows Lance Harder thru through it. There is a mystery not solved until half way thru the book. Well set up and executed. I was very engaged with the story and thoroughly enjoyed it. I heartily recommend this book and look forward to the next in the series.

Every once in a while ill read a story I shouldn't of. I tend to do so because its difficult for me to admit that I'm choosing to waste a chunk of my life. This was one of those times.
The characters aren't bad, rate them 8 out of 10. As to the p!ot - how someone spent so much time writing something so banal is beyond me. How it got past editors is beyond me. The sentence structure is decent , but otherwise its 1 out of 10.

…or at least it felt like it. The MC did his twelve weeks at OCS and Mr Buzzell left me feeling like I spent every minute there with him. Points to Buzzell for evoking the experience, but after a few chapters of the well worn training/discipline/hard arse DI/whiny nasties get theirs trope, I really wanted him to get on with it. The action, when it finally and implausibly happened, was as much a relief as it was short-lived. The real action, I suppose, will be found in the sequel. Sigh.
As to the MC, he’s a bit of a one-dimensional Mary Sue - handsome, strong, dedicated, a natural if unassuming leader, blah, blah. Don’t get me started on the ‘Nurse Barbie’ lurv interest.
If you’ve read the likes of Brazee and Fox, you’ve read this one. On the plus side, though, this offering is well knocked together, for all it could do with abridgement. I didn’t notice typos or malapropisms - although why American authors keep insisting that the plural of craft (as in aircraft) is not ‘crafts’ (that’s something different) is beyond this pedant’s ken. I liked the fact that the MC’s personal history and family tragedy wasn’t spelled out, but pieced together over several chapters. In this at least there was a hint of character development. Extra points too for not treating the reader as a complete moron.
So, should you give it a go? If you like the trope, go for it, but do so knowing that nothing is really going to happen until book 2 in which Our-Hero-Will-Confront-Aliens-With-Undoubted-Courage-And-Aplomb.

No real surprises, book takes you through the usual training of a bunch of raw recruits, although one is not quite as raw as most
Story starts with a group of hopefuls and they get whittled down to the high flyers. As expected there are a few moments where the select few get to shine and the requisite real world, this is not a drill scenario happens
Lastly the book end with the oh my god moment, which draws you into getting the next. Ok
It's pretty formulaic, but manages to keep you turning the next page and in my case the next book

At one level this is just another sci fi recruit to marine book but I thoroughly liked it and thought it was very well written.

Mostly focused on training but very enjoyable and one of the best versions of this kind of story I have read.

You can pretty much guess how these stories go but still keeps you in the moment and enjoying the ride.
