The Legend of Diamond Lil, second book in the illustrated J.J. Tully mystery series, is perfect for elementary-school kids who love adventure and animals. New York Times bestselling author Doreen Cronin brings the same wonderful humor to the JJ. Tully whodunits that she did to her beloved picture book bestsellers like Diary of a Worm.
In this sequel to the chapter book The Trouble with Chickens, all search-and-rescue dog J.J. Tully wants is to enjoy his retirement. But mama chick Moosh and chicks Dirt and Sugar are acting strange. A possum keeps finding its way into the chicken coop. And J.J. has questions about Diamond Lil, the fancy new dog next door. He’ll have to track down the clues and sniff out the evidence to save the day.

Review
“Children who like a little bit of everything mixed into their reading, particularly mystery, adventure, and animals, will enjoy this book.” -- School Library Journal
Praise for THE TROUBLE WITH CHICKENS: “Cronin brings her droll humor to the chapter book set with great success. Fast-paced and funny, with interesting vocabulary and a well-constructed plot, this is terrific fare for readers.” -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Praise for THE TROUBLE WITH CHICKENS: “The noirlike detective Tully and the funny chickens running around, well, like chickens make appealing characters, especially as drawn by Cornell, who knows how to get TV cartoon–style humor out of the action.” -- Booklist --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

I love this series. Vincent the Funnel turns informant this time around. Lil is not what she seems. The chicks are as wild as ever and Mama Chicken is, indeed, a broody hen. I loved the story.
I hope more stories about J. J. Tully are coming. I just love the 1940's gumshoe style.
I know that j.j. is a retired search-and-rescue dog. I love the one (book) that is TROUBLE WITH CHICKENS when the chicks get kidnapped by Vince the funnel. My second favorite is THE LEGEND OF DIAMOND LIL I wanted to read it so badly I read it in 24 hours. I also have a question why did Ida steal Sugar (little boo)? Well I have this question because she stole sugar and not her baby.
There are a lot of fun illustrations, and kids who have a good imagination would like this book.
But this one was good, and cute. I think my students will really like the twist this story provides.
delightful.
