Fun series, glad to have the original audio available
It may be difficult to present a period-drama set in pre-Reconquista Spain to an American audience, or a general audience unfamiliar with the subject. There is no easy "them" and "us" to build off of, as loyalties were often based on family ties before religion; Christian and Muslim warriors acted as mercenaries or temporarily served Lords of either faith based on the politics of their Liege. Our modern concept of a Nation-State didn't really exist. I think that this series does a good job of quickly summarizing what we as an audience need to know about the kingdoms and characters involved in the story at the beginning, and it settles into establishing the personalities of the characters we're to follow.

The original Spanish audio is available, which I very much appreciate. That isn't always the case with non-English films on Amazon. We basically begin the story near the end of Rodrigo Diaz's page-ship, where of course there is a love triangle involving Rodrigo, a squire, and the squire's fiance. We run through some political machinations, and we continue with the story of El Cid.

Overall, I am enjoying the series, and I hope to see more like it from Amazon in the future.

Very well researched historical series, based on the poem "Cantar de Mio CiD" this season deals with the life of young Rodrigo and his ascending heroic path to become the legend character El Cid.
The acting is excellent and the portrait if Spanish Catholic and Islamic kingdoms is very accurate.
The movie portraits the alliances between Catholic and Islamic kingdoms against other catholic and/or Islamic kingdoms. It also portraits the tolerance of Spanish Islam of Jews and Christians within their kingdoms, that is a raw model for this troubling times. 500 years later Islam was expelled from Spain starting a long period of mistrust and misunderstanding. I would love to see more seasons with the complete story.

High level of historical accuracy
I'm not a historian, just an amateur with an interest in historical costuming and the history of medieval Spain. I am LOVING this! Most historical dramas set in the Middle Ages have costumed their men in doublets all made from the same pattern, their women in flights of modern fantasy, and their peasants in burlap sacks. This one is about as real as you can get with both the grittiness of life in the Middle Ages as well as with the textiles and clothing styles. And the court intrigues stick very close to the actual history, though they did take a few liberties. Count Flain appears to have been a real person, but I'm not sure about his son Orduno.

One can choose the audio and subtitles for this magnificent serie.
One can choose the audio ,original Castillian, subtitled if needed.
I like the quality of the series, actors, setting.
We spend many months in this area.
When El Cid film was watched the generations that were born specially in South America were called Ximena, or Rodrigo, so many loved this version.
If you visit Spain in the Cathedral of Burgos there are together buried.
When El Cid, Don Rodrigo de Vivar died his wife buried him in a church where 200 monks had been massacred by Muslim, but when the war with France started and their troops enter Spain then looted everything including his tumb, taking his body back to France as a trophy, his remains were dispersed and disrespected.
What Spain was able to rescue or buy was years later buried next to his beloved Doña Ximena.
I recomend also to watch Isabel.
Excellent series.

Disappointed
BAD VOICE OVER ACTING in English. I am afraid they wasted money on voice over actors. I would have much preferred subtitles, because the voice overs ruined the actual acting. It's difficult to tell at this point whether the acting is good....

Sick twisted false version of the virtuous good El Cid don't watch
Sick twisted false version of the virtuous good El Cid. This is not history This is the perversion of history to sicken the souls of those who watch it and violate there goodness. Lies only tare down the soul. The historical El Cid was not like this. The woman were not like this. I guess the people who right these shows have been fed a steady diet of porn and perversion. If the writers had lived and worked in the real world without such distorted dark perverted vision they would have seen real virtue and courage like the real El Cid. They would make real art that elevates the soul because it is based in reality and truth. They would be able to portray the many hero men who who do not use and abuse woman and only use there strength for lust and not love. That there are men that can love and cherish one woman only their whole life and be satisfied and happier then the men who can only degrade and use and abuse woman and never love any woman or themselves.

I could not get through the 1st show.
I am scratching my head why Amazon is showing this. It reminded me of a high school film production. If anyone has seen the other shows, I would be interested in knowing if it got any better. It could just be the bad voice overs. Did not realize that.

Insulting the Memory of Bronston's classic 1961 film
This was absolute crap, following what has become Amazon and so many other streaming monoliths annoying pattern of recreating inferior and boring formulas and mixing them with awful scripts, CGI and easily prettified digital camera work. If one wants to see this story in it's almost perfect incarnation, watch, watch and watch again the 1961 epic with Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren and Herbert Lom, which is a work of such greatness it effortlessly blows this piece of uselessness away with one quick and easy breath.
