Legion of Despair: Book Three in The Borrowed World Series (A Post-Apocalyptic Societal Collapse Thriller) Kindle Edition
From the Publisher
Survival Thrillers By Franklin Horton
Gritty, unrelenting survival fiction set in a collapsed America, with gut-wrenching conflicts, realistic scenarios, and characters who will burn themselves into your memories.
Three outstanding series set in one fictional world.
The Borrowed World Series
Jim Powell thought the country was due for a reset. He knew it would bring tough times, but he was a prepper and thought he was ready.
He was wrong. Could anyone really be prepared for the chaos, violence, and death that a collapse brings?
Jim will stare down the barrel of a gun just as often as he uses one. He will lose as many people as he saves. Every victory will come at a cost. Even as he helps his friends and family survive, he will struggle with the nagging thought that he is responsible for their suffering because he wanted this to happen.
Despite the hardship, Jim Powell comes to understand that people have to find happiness, humor, and purpose even in the bleakest of worlds in order to retain their humanity and thrive.
The Mad Mick Series
For hardened assassin Conor Maguire and his snarky daughter, Barb, navigating a collapsed America is little more than business as usual. They have food, weapons, top-notch gear, and connections in the darkest corners of the special operations community. Then Barb is kidnapped by a warlord desperate for labor to work his farms.
The kidnappers have no idea whose daughter they've taken. They don't realize that Conor is one of the specialized tools the United States government keeps behind glass and only breaks out when someone needs to die. The kidnappers don't know the fear Conor's code name invokes in the shadowy world of murder and mayhem. But they'll soon realize that when it comes to protecting his family, Conor Maguire is without conscience, without compassion, and without equal.
The Locker Nine Series
A determined young woman and a psychopath living out his favorite video games clash in the apocalyptic aftermath of a nationwide terror attack.
Grace's dad taught her survival, self-defense, and shooting, then sent her away to college hoping she'd never need those skills. All he wanted was to give her a fighting chance if the world fell apart.
Then it did.
Is there a recommended reading order?
These three series take place in the same world and roughly the same geographic region so there are some instances of the storylines overlapping. You can read each series independently, but there some situations where reading them in a particular order adds more depth to the story.
- Mad Mick makes his first appearance in the second Locker Nine book, Grace Under Fire. Reading the Locker Nine Series before Mad Mick gives you more insight into the character.
- Mad Mick encounters some of the folks from the Borrowed World Series in Mad Mick 7, Ultraviolent. The events of this book take place between Borrowed World 8 and Borrowed World 9. Reading Ultraviolent before Resurgent will give you more background information.

Alice isn't as lucky as Gary. She has not made it home yet. Matter of matter, she may not. Alice awakens on the floor of a crazy man's house. A man that she knows killed one of her other coworkers. The man is starting to display signs of Dissociative Identity Disorder.
In addition to all the struggles that they are facing, a new threat begins to emerge. A man who has resources and the knowledge how to use them wants to take over the valley.
How will our good guys going to fare??
Horton again delivers with this amazing sequel! He continues to develop his characters in a way you can see them evolving to what is going on around them. I have read several books and the character(s) may be well developed but even after a tragic event, he or she is still the same as before the event. As most of us know that is definitely not how things work. I can even relate to the "BAD" guys in some parts of the book. I highly recommend this book and related series. If nothing else, you will want to be like Jim!
Story starts where the main characters who work at a government agency are at a required meeting on the other side of the state from their homes. Similar to what an EMP strike would do, terrorist attack the electrical grid and refiners. Without gas and power people quickly become desperate as they run out of fuel and food and water are limited at best. The series track the people from the meeting literally walking most of the way back to their homes as well as what Jim's (main character) family does at home based on his instructions and prior preparations. The story is VERY realistic on how most things would happen as society collapses and it it is every man for themselves.
The group makes it home only to find the violence they had seen on the road was already causing havoc in their community. At the end of the third book those that made it home are banding together to work as a team till the US can get the grid back up. This is very similar to EMP related books but better written and truly brings you close to all the characters and their families. Just a great first three books and hope to read further in the story soon.
If you like post apocalyptic fiction, action packed, fast paced survival stories, then this series is for you. If you like family oriented stories, then this is the book for you. Basically if you like all genres of fiction, you will want to take a look at this
Franklin's style of writing is a joy to read. He has a knack of getting people involved in the characters and keeping them involved until the very end. I highly recommend this series.
Follow the characters as society collapses from an ISIS attack forcing them to make a harrowing journey across Virginia to their families left stranded. What makes Franklin Horton's books outstanding is that all his characters are ordinary people lacking any military training and their travel back home becomes dangerous with the life-death decisions encountered by the people they meet enroute. One of his main characters has accepted that this new world of anarchy while another still harbors that the world still has redeeming qualities. People die when wrong decisions are made.
You won't find yourself disappointed by reading this dystopian adventure.
