One of the most fully achieved human beings who has ever lived, Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) is recognized the world over as a figure of infinite curiosity, feverish imagination and sublime artistic ability.
This updated edition of our XL title provides the most comprehensive survey of the life and work of this master painter, sculptor, architect, scientist, and inventor. Its catalogue raisonné of Leonardo’s paintings covers both his surviving and his lost painted works. With full-bleed details of many paintings, the reader is able to inspect the subtlest facets of brushworks that came to revolutionize Art History.
A further catalog of Leonardo’s drawings arranges nearly 700 of his drawings by category (architecture, technical, proportion, cartography, etc) and showcases his fabulous observational finesse, from anatomical studies to architectural plans, from complex engineering designs to pudgy infant portraits. It includes a fresh chapter exploring the artist’s mesmerizing manuscripts.
The accompanying account of Leonardo’s life and work includes a special in-depth exploration of his masterworks The Annunciation and The Last Supper.

a) There is an almost obsessional preoccupation with extreme close-ups. One double page shows just a nose and lips. Another double page shows the head of Cecilia Gallerani on the left leaf, with part of her head running in to the centre valley, and the right leaf shows nothing at all. On the other hand Leonardo's divine sketch 'Study for the head of a girl 1483' which could easily have been shown actual size, is presented like a postage stamp.
b) This is a really giant size book, like a pulpit bible, and on the text pages there are vast areas of blank white paper, yet the printing point size is very small. Being a 'senior' this means I have to use strong reading glasses which simply puts me off reading the text at all. In a book this size and stature I find this an unacceptable failure of graphic design so for me this is a case of 'so near yet so far'. You may well think me harsh and unkind, and for the Leonardo lover this is great value for money, and I understand the paperback edition is presented in a more handleable 2 volume edition, which I now wish I had ordered. Is this is so please enlighten me.
c) I would only say, before you slag me off as I'm sure you'd like to, I'm a trained designer and a registered Architect and am very accustomed to being vilified for the shortcomings of my work, so I feel no remorse for passing on the benefit of my feelings to this forum.

The book contains ( well you probably know ) his paintings, scientific work and drawings with a number of items. Such as pencils and charcoal.
You can see the book is complete in every way by the inclusion of ' doodles.' ( a lot of you haven't the faintest idea what I am on about have you? Well, you know when you are on the phone ( well, that is when you had to stay in one place and not have a ' Hands free ' you would stand/sit and draw the strangest things on a writing pad ( well I doodled.) These are sometimes turned into a number of beautiful pictures.
I have never seen a book like this. You can tell because I have ended up writing a load of strange sh**.
I am just unable to explain the incredible beauty of this book.
( And I did not even mention the information given in the book. But you have probably fell asleep by now or jumped off the roof )
Absolutely Amazing Art, Beauty and knowledge.
