Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dragt conjures up elements of Tolkien and the Arthurian mythos... the rich language, lush descriptions, and sense of wonder allow it to hold its own against any competitor." — Publishers Weekly

"Readers will be enchanted by its timeless sense of wonder and adventure. This hero's journey evokes a legend in the making, and Tiuri embodies the classic knightly ideals of honor, valor, and chivalry." Booklist

"The English translation of a prizewinning 1962 Dutch historical adventure exhibits... old-school charms."  Kirkus

"The characters are appealing and the action will keep readers engaged." — School Library Journal

"A true page-turner." — Sunday Times (UK)

"A thrilling, page-turning tale... My 10- and 11-year-old were both gripped." — Telegraph (UK)

Review

It is fascinating, captivating in the same way as Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. As well as the familiar battle between good and evil, we are presented with a discovery of true chivalry. --Schager Courant
Gripping from its opening moment onwards, this award-winning book doesn't miss a beat from its thrilling beginning to its satisfying ending. -- Julia Eccleshare
Gripping... Inspiring. --Rachel Khoo

2.0 out of 5 stars A dull and slow adventure that pretends to be epic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2020
A lengthy book with 508 pages. Our daughter liked the start and was very pleased with the read until its got repetitive and boring. The story seems to be old-fashioned and bland. With many back and forth horse rides. While barely anything happens in between apart from long drawn out encounters with s various characters. We’re now going to see the series on Netflix. And had already ordered the second book in the series for her (that she is less keen to read following this first instalment).

It’s an adventure tale of a boy who embarks on a long quest with a mysterious mission to deliver a letter. Along the way he encounters suspicious characters as he has to cross mountains and dangerous forests. It's about some modest action, adventure, friendship ect.A nd there are some unsuspected twists and secrets.
As it is quest in a medieval setting the book make our daughter think of the Hobbit that she read as well, although struggled even more with that book given the 1920’s language. This reads better as the writing is clear and the story line seems to be pretty straightforward.
Most of the characters are interesting. Although the character descriptions tend to be too elaborate. And my daughter also pointed out that the book is very male-dominated with only a few female characters. Also there are christian references in there.

My daughter wouldn’t recommend the book to readers younger than she is (9-years old) as “the book it is quite voluminous, often with a some lengthy words". "And for the youngest ones there may be too much fighting”.
