The plot was unique, interesting, and flowed well. I found myself very immersed into the events, and strongly connected to some of the characters. There were quite a few events I didn’t anticipate, but they made perfect sense.
The Stockholm Syndrome aspect was superbly done and I became very attached to [the victim]. I felt her anxiety, fear, confusion.
The atmospheric qualities were great — I felt like I was there in the old house and seeing the mountains and land.
It’s hard to say much without spoilers! But I really enjoyed this book and came to care for those involved.

This latest story by Rona Halsall is told in three parts by Eva and Nancy. It's a very dark and disturbing tale of coercive control, gaslighting and deception, with the author drawing us in slowly during Eva's perspective in the first part, then revealing what happened twenty four years ago when Nancy disappeared, before finally leading us back to the present day. I loved the atmospheric setting of the farm, which really added tension and intrigue to the story. It's a well crafted plot, with a few spine tingling twists along the way and some very dark moments which had me on the edge of my seat, very reluctant to put the book down and return to real life, culminating in me reading it in less than a day. Another gripping read from Halsall which I highly recommend.
Rona's characters are so believable, with all their flaws drawn honestly on the page, the setting is enough to make you on edge, without ever tipping over into predictability. Well done, Rona - another 'belter' of a read! When is the next book due?!
This is just the start of a 24- year-long nightmare for Nancy who accepts a lift from Judy, a stranger, on that fateful night.
Judy initially welcomes Nancy into her home - a remote farmhouse in Snowdonia - but the longer Nancy stays there the more controlling and brutal Judy acts towards her. She treats Nancy as a slave and punishes her severely for any misdemeanour.
Out if the blue, a phone call from a Welsh hospital comes through to her family home in Nottingham. The caller says that Nancy has sustained a head injury and she cannot be allowed home without someone there to look after her.
Ana, not previously aware that she has an older sister, immediately sets off to help her. And so Ana’s troubles and her search for the truth begin.
What a great psychological thriller this turned out to be. The author describes a dysfunctional family, full of lies and deceit: two sisters, desperate to uncover the truth and a twisted, controlling liar and murderer who wants to maintain the status quo in her own life.
Each of the characters in this story is flawed in some way - they have lied, stolen, cheated, for their own gain and yet, as a reader, you can feel some sympathy and even empathy for them. This is down to the author’s skill in describing the circumstances that have lead to their behaving as they do. And I applaud he for that. Plus, the real villains get what they deserve in the end - which is always good!
