Mary Burton loves writing suspense, researching law enforcement and forensic procedures, morning walks, baking, books, and tiny dachshunds. She also enjoys hunting down serial killers, which she does in her New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels of suspense and romance. This book had a bit of a different feel from Burton’s other books but it was still a great read. It’s full of mystery and suspense with interesting twists and turns. Dangerous secrets, lies, and manipulations are scattered throughout the story and there are a lot of suspects. There’s no way to tell who’s telling the truth. To me, this book feels more character-driven rather than procedural and the story jumps around from past to present with multiple POVs (Clare’s sisters – Brit (older) and Marisa (Clare’s twin), Jo-Jo (Clare’s former best friend), John Richards (detective trying to solve Clare’s case), Jack (family friend and bad boy) and then, of course, the bad guy). It was really interesting to read the different chapters from different characters' POVs because they gave the book a more in-depth, real feel since they were all flawed in some way with real struggles. There were also a lot of warped family dynamics and some addiction-related/psychological issues with some of the characters. It’s a gripping, intense story with a satisfying end!

I really enjoyed this book, so many little twists thrown in and I felt myself getting frustrated as no one would believe Marisa and wanted to brush it all under the carpet and so I really felt for her character and admired her determination in hunting down the truth even when it out her whole credibility and life at risk she never once have up. It made her more relatable and easy to see how she ended up down the dark paths she often found herself on.
