This book stands out because it is very well written with great characters and just the right touch of humor in it.
This is a love story about Nicole aka Nicky who has mobility issues. Nicky does her best to work around her mobility challenges. She's smart, attractive, has a great sense of humor, and a positive attitude.
Nicky has secretly carried a torch for Zane her best male friend Zane for a while. She doesn't act on the attraction because she's not the usual type that Zane goes for. Zane is ex-military and lost his wife tragically. Zane doesn't go for anyone that he might possibly get too close to in a relationship after his wife died.
Nicky and Zane are surprised one night when they act on their attraction after an office party. Nicky backs off the next day, worried that she will end up hurt by Zane and that there is no way for a relationship between them to work out well. They both have problems with the risks in a relationship.
Nicky realizes sometime later that she is pregnant. Pregnancy for Nicky comes with both challenges and risks due to her mobility issues. Zane freaks out about the pregnancy because of the risks for Nicky and also because his wife was pregnant when she died. Nicky has some insecurities to work through and Zane has some deep seated fears to work through about losing someone.
This book is unique because you don't often have storylines that deal with real life issues such as someone with mobility issues and challenges. Mallery handles this difficult but realistic problem in this book very well.
Mallery has the ability in "A little bit pregnant" and some of her other books to write characters so well written that the characters actually seem like people that you would meet and want to have as friends. That's quite a unique talent for character development. I've been an avid reader since I was a small child. I have only come across a few writers who have that kind of talent for character development.
My absolute favorite lists of Susan Mallery books that I read over and over are:
A little bit pregnant
Her last first date
Two of a kind (one of her most recent books)
Each of these books stand out for me because of the heroines. They are unique, have spunk, independent, strong, and a great sense of humor.
Nicki had come a long way in dealing with her disabilities. She was a very independent lady. The book described how she could drive herself, and how her house was set up, so she could get around in her wheelchair. The book also went on to let us know the challenges one faces when they are in a wheelchair. For instant travel, or hotel.
Zane was grieving the death of his wife. He vowed he would never love again. It hurt too much to lose the one you love. He may be grieving, but it was cute to see how he was falling for Nicki. I know some fathers to be freak and want to protect, but you will have to read to see how Zane went over the top. I would have wanted to choke him. He did it because he loved and cared, and wanted to protect mother and baby, but still...
This is a fun book that you will just have to read.
