Until Simon left to fight in the crusades, home was where they were together.
Three years ago Melisende’s husband, Simon, went off with Lord Barnard and his men to join King Phillippe of France on the Third Crusade. Now Lord Barnard is dead and his son, Lord Charles, has come home from the crusades with the last of their men -- and Simon is not among them.
Lord Charles claims Simon died saving his life. Melisende suspects there is more to the story. Left to fend for herself and her two young children, Melisende is determined to discover what really happened to Simon at the battle for Acre.
The truth is far stranger and more unsettling than she could ever have imagined.

McLachlan: Walls of Wind, and two young adult science fiction novels, The Occasional Diamond Thief (winner of the Alberta Publishers Award (APA) for Science Fiction and featured in the National US magazine, VOYA) and The Salarian Desert Game (runner up for the APA and listed in Canadian Top Books For Teens). Robert J. Sawyer reviewed The Walls of Wind and had this to say:
"Look out, C. J. Cherryh! Step aside, Hal Clement! There's a new master of truly alien SF, and her name is J. A. McLachlan. THE WALLS OF WIND is doubtless THE debut novel of the year."
-- Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning science fiction author
Tamora Pierce read The Occasional Diamond Thief and The Salarian Desert Game and said:
"Tense, thrilling, edge-of-the-seat reading--I tore through this! Kia and Agatha are a fascinating pair, Kia so practical, down-to-earth, and wilful; Agatha so mystical and driven. More, please!" ~ Tamora Pierce

What others are saying about her:
"In ways SF readers can favorably compare with icons of the genre, such as Ursula K. Le Guin, James Tiptree Jr. and Robert J. Sawyer, WALLS OF WIND boldly weaves anthropology, psychology, drama, future history, even meteorology, into a tapestry of viewpoints and epiphanies that propel McLachlan's characters toward a necessary and illuminating change in their collective relationship. ... If you read no other "alien" authors this year, don't miss WALLS OF WIND." - Bookreporter

This is the story of Melisende who becomes a widow when her husband rides off to the Crusades. I was impressed with how she outsmarted the three men in her life and gained control as to what they could and could not do to her and her children. I hope there are more books in this series!
