I did load the software on mine just to see and it has simple video calling so this would also be great for family across the country.
I can't believe how clear the sound was. Yes, you still have the sound as if you are "in a room" but no echo and not "tinny". So it's not a pronounced room sound, just not like you are holding a phone, of course.
I can't imagine needing more than this camera for a single users. Maybe for a conference room needing to see everyone it probably wouldn't be the greatest but I bet it still wouldn't be bad.
It has face locating features and zoom meaning it will automatically follow your face when you move side to side but within the camera's range. It doesn't move the camera. It just pans and tilts digitally. If you really need this feature then I would probably buy a model up but hey, what do you expect.
Enough said. I hope this helps someone.
Pay the extra 10 bucks or whatever. Back away right now.
Inserted into Win7 64-bit, dual-core 3.2Ghz with 4GB RAM and a message told me to plug it into a Hi-speed USB port. All other devices register and work fine through this port.
Logitech software is minimal at best as well as annoying to use.
Installed latest version of Skype to test and it was just terrible. The bandwidth was exceeding 3-mbps, as I just d/l software at a blazing speed, so the Internet connection was not an issue.
I truly felt as if I was back in 1997 on a dial-up connection using a webcam again.
Pixelation, lag, out-of-sync audio/video. Image was low quality and video does not go higher than 640x480.
Maybe you will have better luck or lower expectations.
I had no problems with the "next one up" for 7-10 bucks more. The image was crystal clear, works flawlessly and integrates perfectly, HD resolution at 780/1080, auto-lighting works well and I highly recommend you not buying this camera. It is on the way out and is only worth half of what they are asking compared to generic no-name brands and closeouts.
Don't bother installing the CD that's included, go to Logitech's web site and download the Smart Installer and let it do it's thing for the latest software available. I chose to not install the Logitech Vid(tm) HD that came with this because I intend to use only Skype. This web cam works perfectly with Skype and my friends and relatives on the other end say the video looks almost as good as HD (using the slowest DSL speed that AT&T offers). Make sure you have plenty of light in the room when you're Skype-ing, the more light, the better the video will look on the other end. And it has face recognition you can set, so if you move around during your Skype video call, the web cam follows you to a point - up until you move out of the line of sight, of course.
This isn't the latest/greatest Logitech web cam, but for the price it's hard to find anything that's better. I chose Logitech for their 2 year warranty, besides having the microphone built into this - most other brands you need to buy a separate headset to go along with the web cam.
The embedded microphone is good enough that I haven't even bothered to replace my busted headset. I've recorded greetings on it with no background interference, which is awesome if you do occasional audio splicing. However it does pick up feedback from the speakers every once in a while if you're in a group video chat with lag like Google Hangouts - especially if the speakers are right next to your monitor. But for VoIP programs with a Push-To-Talk function, that's never a problem.
If you're more of an audiophile I wouldn't rely on the included microphone for recordings, but for the casual user I highly recommend this model. Even after almost 2 years of use, I don't expect to be replacing it for quite a long time.
EDIT: I bought this in Jan 2013. It's August 2015 as of this edit, and the cam/mic are still working perfectly, even after two system rebuilds and a house flood. I think that's a pretty good indicator of quality.
