Read the book. If it weren't for all the America-haters, this movie would have swept national and international awards. No matter, eternal truths will always endure. Chopping off heads is wrong. Enslaving women and children is wrong. Weaponizing women, children, and the mentally infirm against your enemies is wrong. The men and women depicted in this film are the tip of the spear that lets the rest of us go about our daily business with some semblance of peace. Whatever your views are on war, foreign policy, or military service this is a beautiful story produced with the highest standards of quality and excellence.

I'm a 22 year veteran and those words rings pretty hollow these days

This is a true story that slipped from the consciousness of most people here in the US within a couple weeks, typical short sighted people who these war veterans give their lives and hearts for. Watch the CNN interview with Marcus Luttrell and Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg was changed by doing this part. This country should stand up and recognize the effort of our veterans, and don't use the phrase "thank you for your service" so loosely. I'm a 22 year veteran and those words rings pretty hollow these days. Respectfully submitted.

Incredible Movie That Highlights The Incredible Determination of These Men
Verified purchase
I bought this incredible movie that is based on a true story in 4k. I highly recommend this movie if you like military movies and you appreciate and are grateful to the men and woman who sacrifice themselves for our freedom and safety. This movie was done incredibly well because of the dedication of the director, the actors, and the crew. I didn't find anything "hollywood" about this movie - it's just a great movie. I was literally crying inside watching this movie. I also watched the special features, which are a must see. There is no dought that Marcus Luttrell fought hard to live, and so did his brothers. But, as the title says, there was only one lone survivor. I mean no disrespect to the Navy Seals, but it is by the grace of God that Marcus made it out alive. I pray for the safety of all of our military personnel, they are all precious. God Bless the Military.

I also highly recommend other true-life inspired military movies including: Black Hawk Down and 13 Hours: The secret Soldiers of Benghazi. These movies are amazing. They highlight the bravery, heroism, and sacrifice of our fine military. The military have my deepest respect, gratitude, love, and prayers.

Compelling, exciting true-life story

Took a chance buying this one without knowing much about it, but I was blown away by the story, the acting, and the production values. Lone Survivor tells the compelling and edge-of-your-seat story of a real Seal Team mission in Afghanistan. I was glued to the screen throughout the film, and have since shown it numerous times to friends to rave reviews. Mark Wahlberg is a constantly improving actor, with greater range than shown in his earlier performances. Sound and picture were excellent on this 4K disc. Well worth the cost.

Enjoyable Military Entertainment if You Can See Past the Hollywood Inaccuracies.

As far as being an entertaining film, Lone Survivor delivers. I thoroughly enjoyed it. As a veteran, I have to struggle with disassembling the various aspects of the production that are utter fantasy and blatantly inaccurate. As with almost all military productions from Hollywood, staying with the facts of the actual events are too difficult and padding/inflating/avoiding them is easier than to just present what actually happened. The pre-preemptive "BASED upon actual events" is what producers use to fall back on when people who know the truth call BS on them.

If you enjoy a well-produced story with decent cinematography and excellent action sequences, you will enjoy Lone Survivor. If you want to learn the facts regarding Operation Red Wings, read Luttrell's book. The controversy surrounding the alleged "vote" is described by the author and presented in the film and is oft challenged by many. Only one living person knows the truth but don't let that detract from the overarching facts.

A superb movie, beautifully presented in the 4K format.

Lone Survivor, the story of a four-man SEAL patrol during Operation Red Wings, is a true story of sacrifice and heroism that is mostly faithful to the source material, Marcus Luttrell’s written account. The film itself is a small-scale war movie, not one that has a cast of thousands, but the intimate nature of its focus in no way detracts from its great emotional impact. It is a cold-hearted person indeed who will not be deeply moved by the time the credits roll.

There are a handful of special features on the disc, and coverage is justly given to the real men who gave their lives during the intense engagement. The film looks great in the 4K format, which really shows off the “you are there” handheld photography style. I would like to have seen some more extra features looking at the historical context of the action depicted in the movie, but that’s a minor quibble. This is an excellent film presented in an excellent format and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

My PT at the VA recommended this when I recommended The Terminal List.

I think Me binging TTL tainted my opinion slightly.

What I liked most is the ending where they show clips from the true story part.

What I liked least is the cliff falling scenes. The way they fell there’s no way they’d survive. Needed more realistic to vibe believable for me since it’s a true story.

If you hadn’t seen Comando or Rambo … Comando, the law would explode in not out. The building blows out. Rambo, the law has a back blast area so nope, the helicopter would have had a hole blown out back of it were real.

Those were fictional movies. Lone Survivor is based on a real story. Do better with scenes outta respect for the vets next time.

If you’re not a veteran you might think wow. How’d a human being do that.

Movie magic wasn’t necessary and still could have yielded the same impact, pun intended.

People love the people who serve. Let’s keep it real next time

Grossly Over Embelished
Verified purchase
The movie Lone Survivor appears to be just another fictitious, grossly over embellished account of a very poorly planned mission ( Operation Red Wings ) that was doomed before the helicopters left their Base. From several sources many of the scenes in the movie never happened. The director stated he knew he “needed to get it right” but seems to have been a failure at finding the truth. It is appalling that the fallen soldiers families were involved in the making of this movie. To watch the movie as perhaps a way to make sense of their sons deaths, have some type of closure and to honor them may have given the families some solace but it is even more appalling that the families who watched the movie watched their sons die a graphic, terrible death in a movie which depicts events that may have never happened and which may haunt them for the rest of their lives. Many believed that there were a maximum of 30 to 40 Taliban in the entire valley and that 7 Taliban flanked the 4 soldiers and having pinned them down proceeded to kill them. Luttrell’s account by different sources is that the 4 soldiers must have killed at least 50 Taliban and 80 to 200 had surrounded them. It is written that Military report says there is no account of any enemy deaths and none were found when the military came and recovered the fallen soldiers. Big difference between 7 and as many as 200 Taliban being present. Michael Murphy is a true hero. Luttrell was an extremely lucky man who got separated from his comrades as they were being killed and was rescued by an Afghan villager Mohammed Gulab. Luttrell had all 11 magazines on him when rescued, by reports. Axelson had one magazine left. In Luttrell’s words by one apparent interview “I put my weapon down in a gunfight while my best friend was getting killed. So that pretty much makes me a coward…. I broke right there, I quit right there."

A reenactment quite different than Hollywood’s account with passages from Mohammed Gulab depict that the four Seals were simply flanked and out gunned by a small group ( 7 to 14 ) of Afghan militia and as the three other Seals were being killed Luttrell running for his life managed to escape.

I wasn’t there and I’m not trying to imply, judge or accuse anyone of purposely lying and profiting from the deaths of fallen soldiers. Research Operation Red Wings on your own and ask why did 20 men die needlessly ( 16 in a rescue helicopter, Gulab’s nephew, 3 Seals on the ground ) and how did one man escape? I believe ( or hope ) if Mark Wahlberg knew all the true events surrounding Operation Red Wings that he would not have been a part of the movie. God Bless Mohammed Gulab he is a man of honor by all accounts which you will understand with a little research. I don't recommend this movie after learning more about Operation Red Wings.
