This is my first Kaylie Newell book, and although paranormal anything is not my go-to read, I really enjoyed this story. This book covers quite a bit: suspense, humor, werewolves, and of course, romance. A young woman, Maggie, returns to a rural, mountain town in southern Oregon to pick up a cold case; her missing best friend, Aimee, who disappeared a year ago while they were on a road trip together. Maggie has lost faith in law enforcement and investigators, and believes she can do a better job of finding out what happened to her friend. She enlists the help of one of the town's deputies, albeit with great angst on both their parts--she is put off by his brusqueness and doesn’t trust him but needs his intel on the case, and he just wants her safe and will do whatever it takes to get her to leave town--and a romance is born. The writing is smooth, easy to follow, and has enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. There is a sweetness to this story while at the same time it held me in some suspense. A number of other characters are well developed creating interest and opportunity for future stories. The paranormal component was well done, to the point of plausibility in this non-believer’s mind. I really felt for Maggie’s loss and desperate search for answers. The story has a happy ending for Maggie’s love life, but her best friend is still missing; not a cliff hanger but certainly a need to find out what happened to Aimee persists. So, time for the second book in this trilogy!

I read this engaging story in one day. The mystery was well crafted, and though not every reveal was a surprise, those that were were very unpredictable.
I loved the paranormal spin/origin story, and while the romance was a bit Insta-love for me, many readers of the genre are sure to enjoy it. I’ve already started the second in the series, and can’t wait to see where the author takes us from here.

One year ago, Maggie Sullivan lost her best friend Amy. On a girl's trip, they made a rest stop. Amy disappeared without a trace. Now Maggie is back at the scene of the crime. She has quit her job and returned to Wolfe Creek desperate for answers. Call her obsessed, call her Nancy Drew, call her foolish and naive; it doesn't matter. She has no choice, she needs answers. She finds her answer and so much more.

This is my first Kaylie Newell read. In the mood for some shifters, I borrowed it from Audible. It was not what I expected since the Wolfe Creek Legend was barely touched upon. Instead, this was a romantic mystery, not one of my favorite genres. However, by the time I realized that I decided to give it a try. It was good. The main characters are developed, as are a couple of the supporting cast. The setting is nicely outlined and the mystery is compelling. There were twists and while not all reveals were shocking, few were obvious. My only complaint is the lack of depth. The relationship jumps, important discussions never take place, and towards the end, the pacing changes making it feel rushed. I would have loved more of the magic of Wolfe Creek as well. Still, it was entertaining.

This book was a unique read for me. What started off as a girl looking for her best friend turned out to be a journey of secrets that unfold, a love story, and the beginning of a great series.
