How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

4.0 out of 5 starsLizbeth vs many ppl who want her dead
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2020
This is still a suck me in, read it til the end story, let me say that first. It’s a more complex story than book 1, but I felt it’s equally good. Regarding the treatment of racism, which a number of negative reviews have been posted; perhaps folks born After 1990 should read about Rosa Parks, Jim Crow laws, and riots at Kent state university. I believe Charlaine has been meticulous in portraying the way African Americans were treated in the US between about 1860-1950. There’s a reason the Civil war occurred, slavery wasn’t just about owning human beings, it was an enormous culture trading on deep seated beliefs that only white men had rights. Women were not treated much better. It was a horror, and reading about even a fraction of those times is more chilling than anything on a movie screen. But I do not believe these portions of the book are gratuitous, they’re included to set the backstory of a people ready to rise up. I’m still interested in Lizbeth’s story, & want to see who & what she will become.

2.0 out of 5 starsConvoluted and overwrought
Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2020
I don't know WHY I bought this, because I didn't find the first book in the series, An Easy Death, all that compelling. This book was just overwrought. Everybody was watching each other: They were watching him and her, he and she were watching them, someone else was watching all of them, all in this little Southern town. It's a wonder they weren't tripping over one another. The plot is so convoluted, it became a little ridiculous. Without giving away any spoilers, the ending was unsatisfactory. I was tired with the whole thing by the end of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cool Character, Meh Story

The Gunny Rose series reminds me of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. The main character is interesting but there is little to nothing remarkable about the goings on around her. Book 2 drags to the point you don't care how it ends which is unfortunate because the first novel in the series had a lot of promise. This is supposed to be a post apocalyptic western/ alternate history where the U.S. has been chopped up into smaller territories by foreign powers. The first novel really captured that, but the second addition to the series lacked the dusty, third world atmosphere that made the first book fun to read.

I cannot imagine why Ms. Harris believed that a story about slavery, wizards, and gunslinger s might be appropriate, particularly in today's political and social climate. I enjoyed her Dookie and Midnight series. Please return to what you know. She is quite obviously out of both her comfort and knowledge levels. It shows.

3.0 out of 5 stars Two of three- the transition

The author did a great job on book one, and seemed to have ideas about book three (now that I’ve read all three) — so book two feels more like a bridge between the two. I liked the characters and I wanted to see where they were going- but this book definitely could not be a stand alone story, and if it was book 1 I would not have moved on to the next. Passable if you liked the first of the series, and the only way to introduce some new characters that become far more fun in book #3. At least the chemistry between the main characters heats up more and their relationship is a fun read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tough To Get Through

There is a really cool world in the Gunnie Rose books, but the plot fail to reach the same heights. It was tough to finish this book, since it was so slow and convoluted. I kept hoping for a bigger payoff, but the ending felt thrown together and the relationship between Eli and Lizbeth has quickly become tedious. However, I get a feeling that again in book three the ill-suited air will be thrown together in yet another meandering adventure.

3.0 out of 5 stars love the author

I love this author’s imagination and the worlds she creates. The Wild West lifestyle in an alternate America makes for some very exciting action and Gunnie Rose fits right in. There was a lot going on, as well as a lot of unrevealed but hinted at activity in the HRE, that made parts too busy sometimes. I look forward to finding out all the secrets and finding out Gunnie has a much larger role than anyone expects.

ok. if you have $ this this book is Ok. How ever this is the 4th author this month that stopped the Kindle unlimited and needed extra $. The first 2 at least finished the main story arch. That I was OK with. It was like this is what I'm about if you want more pay for it. However this and Melzer's (the culper ring) made me feel like I just came back from the used care dealer. Oh that will be extra.

I'm not saying the author's work is not worth US $12.00 for each book. just not to me, no matter how much I want to know what happens. I thought that was the whole concept behind kindle unlimited.

A fast read, it keeps you interested. But Lizbeth seems a bit dim. I know books these days are more shallow. But the "why" of this story seems rather thin, Eli's story was probably more interesting than presented. Also seemed as if the characters weren't overly smart about their actions and decisions. It's a good read while traveling or a beach book

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed. Will wait for reviews before buying the next book in this series.

Was this book written by the same author as the first book? It wasn't to my taste. Her writing style seemed to change throughout the course of the book. It seemed like she was rushed to write the second book that she didn't bother adding any clear details or actions about the characters and what they were doing. Characters died with no explanation or reason. It skipped around details that were probably vital to the storyline.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too expensive!

I liked the second part of the Gunnie Rose story. It was a gift, but I found out it cost $28 for the paperback version! Unbelievable! The hardcover was less expensive. The price has dropped a few dollars, but I would never have paid that much for the paperback version! My gift giver was robbed!
