Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Lord of the Rings is a must-read for all fantasy genre fans. Those who have previously read The Hobbit will find The Lord of the Rings as a familiar time and place to return to. This epic fantasy book centers on a hobbit named Frodo Baggins and his loyal group of companions, called The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Lord of the Rings is a three-book compilation that includes The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of The King. The book follows the struggles that a simple hobbit, Frodo, and his friends encounter while trying to destroy an all-powerful ring to save Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings takes place in a fantasy world that is not too unlike the English countryside, though it has characters that range from hobbits to Elven creatures.

The author, J.R.R. Tolkien, uses his command of the English language to beautifully weave a tale like no other, which has laid the groundwork for many of the most popular fantasy books today. Widely regarded as one of the genre's most loved works, The Lord of the Rings has garnered worldwide acclaim and praise from critics and fans alike. The book has been adapted into movies, games, radio, artwork, and many other media.

The Lord of the Rings is the third-best-selling novel of all time and should be required reading for all fans of the namesake movie series.

Review

"A unique, wholly realized other world, evoked from deep in the well of Time, massively detailed, absorbingly entertaining, profound in meaning." -- Review

"Among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century." -- Sunday Telegraph

Trilogy of fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien comprising The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1955), and The Return of the King (1956). The novels, set in the Third Age of Middle Earth, formed a sequel to Tolkien's THE HOBBIT and were succeeded by his posthumous The Silmarillion (1977). The trilogy is the saga of a group of sometimes reluctant heroes who set forth to save their world from consummate evil. Its many worlds and creatures draw their life from Tolkien's extensive knowledge of philology and folklore. At 33, the age of adulthood among hobbits, Frodo Baggins receives a magic Ring of Invisibility from his uncle Bilbo. A Christlike figure, Frodo learns that the ring has the power to control the entire world and, he discovers, to corrupt its owner. A fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarfs, and men is formed to destroy the Ring by casting it into the volcanic fires of the Crack of Doom where it was forged. They are opposed on their harrowing mission by the evil Sauron and his Black Riders. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

1.0 out of 5 stars Cash Grab

As a Lord of the Rings fan, I was incredibly excited about this product. Unfortunately, the product did not live up to my expectations. I've listed the negatives below:

- Very few illustrations that add zero value to the experience. If you were expecting "Harry Potter Illustrated Version" levels of content, you won't find that here.
- The pages are concerningly thin. I'd compare them to the colorful tissue paper you put in gift bags.
- The book is prepared with little to no care (examples in pictures). Make sure you go through your book before it finds your bookshelf, as I was amazed at how many pages were misprinted or cut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing product! Great edition for collectors

I bought the 60th Anniversary edition (hardcover). I paid Rs. 2,999 and after receiving the book, I must say it's worth the price, although the delivery by Amazon was abysmal (delivery was delayed by 3-4 days).

Inside the packaging by Amazon, there's a cardboard box by Harper Collins that stores the book. The book is also protected by the slipcase, which is of good-quality plastic. The binding is very sturdy. The cover and back designs are beautiful, and the spine is a beauty to look at.

There are 50 illustrations by Alan Lee printed on high quality paper. In fact, the pages of the book feel very superior and letter size is perfect to read.

To anyone interested in buying this edition, go for it! You won't regret it one bit.
