Editorial Reviews

Review

“It’s easy to see why the internet has fallen in love with Lore Olympus. This dazzling interpretation of the classic Greek myths is as charming as it is provocative, and as witty as it is startlingly romantic. Prepare to be swept away!”—Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lunar Chronicles

“This is a refreshingly modern and surprisingly poignant take on the Hades and Persephone myth. Not only does Rachel Smythe's talent as an illustrator shine in Lore Olympus but also her skill with weaving a steamy, often laugh-out-loud funny, and emotional retelling.”—Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times bestselling author of From Blood and Ash

“With vivid, irresistible art and storytelling that would make even the Muses swoon, this modern myth deftly tackles the darkness of the ancient stories while never losing its brilliant light. I couldn’t devour it fast enough.”—Alexandra Bracken, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Lore

“Sheer bliss. Rachel Smythe is a master storyteller, filling each gorgeously illustrated page with equal parts humor, heart, and joy.”—Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries and Abandon series

Lore Olympus is a visual feast! It’s sexy and clever, taking ancient Greek myths and spinning them to be relevant today. I could not put this graphic novel down and cannot wait to see more of Persephone and Hades—and the rest of the Lore Olympus pantheon.”—P. C. Cast, New York Times bestselling author of Spells Trouble and the House of Night series

“An inspired, sweet, and thoroughly modern reimagining of Hades and Persephone’s tale. Its cast is memorable, and its central relationship absorbing and spellbinding.”—Aliette de Bodard, award-winning author of Fireheart Tiger

“Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus is a stunning reimagining of classical myth. Smythe adapts the story of Persephone and Hades, removing it from its dark origins and building a brand-new epic with her own complex and beautiful characters. The rest of the gods, nymphs, and creatures of Smythe’s world are the icing on top.”—Liv Albert, author of Greek Mythology: The Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes Handbook and creator of Let’s Talk About Myths, Baby! podcast

“A sweepingly romantic story that offers new meaning with each and every rereading, Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus perfectly balances humor and tragedy, heartbreak and desire. Fans who enjoyed it as a webcomic will be thrilled to hold this luscious work of art in their hands.”—Jo Rochelle, creator of Girl Wonder podcast

Lore Olympus is an addictive, romantic gem of a comic, filled with complex, lovable (and hateable) characters. The artwork is rich and dramatic, with gorgeous colors and bold linework, each panel a dreamy treat for the eyes. I can't wait to continue reading Hades and Persephone’s story.”—Faith Erin Hicks, Eisner Award winner and New York Times bestselling cartoonist

Lore Olympus is the perfect escape. Rachel Smythe’s artwork is vivid and enchanting, with deeply relatable characters and a deft handling of their dark pasts. For anyone looking for a fresh take on Hades and Persephone, Lore Olympus brings us a sexy and delightful romp that captivates until the very last page. Whimsical and heartfelt!”—Ashley Poston, author of the national bestseller Geekerella

Lore Olympus is a delicacy. Funny, dark, sexy, and lavishly illustrated, it delights on every page. I can’t recommend it enough.”—Kate Leth, author of Marvel’s Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!

“Moody, beautiful, and funny . . . Be transported to a gorgeous reimagining of Greek gods in a modern fantasy setting. Romance, drama, trauma, and goofs! You will not be able to put this down once you start!”—Babs Tarr, professional comic artist

“Romantic, radical, and relatable, goddesses have never been more gloriously grounded. A must-read for any girls figuring out their own power.”—Sam Maggs, co-creator of Tell No Tales: Pirates of the Southern Seas

“The tale of Hades and Persephone is one of the most recognizable in all of Greek mythology but in Smythe’s hands, against a sleek modern backdrop, it is made new again. In this reimagining we get a Persephone with agency and nuance, and a Hades with a conscience. The storytelling is immersive, the characters are engaging, and the art is exquisite. I loved every single frame!”—Kalynn Bayron, bestselling author of Cinderella Is Dead

Lore Olympus is my favorite graphic novel—ever. I have read and reread this brilliantly crafted work of art and cannot get enough of this story. Even though the legend of Hades and Persephone is thousands of years old, you will fall in love with these characters in a whole new way—and you’ll never see the twists and turns coming!”—Beth Revis, New York Times bestselling author of Across the Universe

“Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus is an addicting, swoony delight. This clever take on a timeless tale is destined to become a modern classic.”—Adrienne Young, New York Times bestselling author of Fable and Namesake

“Sensitive and elegant . . . Beautiful artwork and compelling characters [take] the forefront of this romantic, tech-savvy retelling of Greek mythology.”—Booklist

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the book, but hate the packaging
By Sarah on November 2, 2021
Absolutely adore Rachel, been following Lore Olympus for years now. It’s interesting to see how it was made into book format. I was almost assuming it would be kept almost the same but two strips per page, but they really did a great job of reformatting the layout to really make it flow. I was really scared it was about to cliff hang on episode 24 but it does go to episode 25, doesn’t completely clear the air but helps.
The addition at the end was lovely and I’m so happy it got to see print.

All that being said, I’m thrilled to have a print edition now, but disappointed for a preorder book from Amazon to be packaged so poorly. It’s a heavy book, it’s going to slide around but the entire bottom corner is all busted up, not just smooshed but ripped. Later I noticed that there’s also a sticky residue on the cover, thankfully it seems to be coming up with no issue.
Overall disappointed in Amazon with my last two book purchases and will probably buy art/graphic novels/hardback books from in person stores moving forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Rachel created magic on paper
By Cutmylifeintopeaches on November 2, 2021
I have been watching the window waiting and it's finally here!! It's absolutely beautiful. The book accurately portrays the devastating trauma a person goes through after sexual assault. I can not thank her enough for illustrating those strong emotions. Hermes is my favorite chaotic good boi. I love her retelling of these classic characters & her use of color. I am SO ready for volume two; I've been following Rachel from the beginning I already have volume two pre-ordered!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Noir Take on the Classic Myth
By Sarah H. on November 2, 2021
I started reading this title on the Webtoons app, and I have loved following the author's vivid noir take on the classic tale of Hades and Persephone with every update. And the new hardcover print version is even more glorious. The colors are richly vibrant and translate the original vertical scrolling format beautifully.

Rachel Smythe's art style reminded me of Al Hirschfeld initially, with her bold lines and elegant curves, but it is truly her own. It gives the reader a feast for the eyes while conveying such nuance that I see and learn something new about every character each time I read it. Her use of color is mind blowing, so I am grateful it is just as amazing in print as it is online.

She also broaches difficult topics such as bullying, PTSD, depression, date rape, communication breakdowns, toxic relationships, and gaslighting through the story in a way that brings awareness to them in a pointed way without making them the sole focus of the story. The characters are incredibly fleshed out people, with many facets to their lives. They are more than their traumas. And I love them for it.

I am looking forward to having vol 2 and the rest of the Lore Olympus story in my personal collection. It will hold a place of honor there.

Recommend for fans of Linda Sejic, Brodi Ashton, Jacqueline Carey, and Rainbow Rowell.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book is Everything I Wanted, Shipping Sucked
By Alora Bucey on November 2, 2021
I just got my book (paperback) about and hour ago and I'm so happy, I pre-ordered back in March just so I could have it after coming back from basic training. For those who know the book from the Webtoon, Volume 1 goes all the way to episode 25. So there are a LOT more volumes to come.

The print of the pages is super high quality and all the colors are very vibrant & the shape of the book lays perfectly in my lap. My favorite part about it all is it has small parts on occasion where the author EXPLAINS HER WRITING CHOICES. It's the cherry on top. The only problem I have isn't the product itself but the shipping.

The package was just a regular Amazon 1 layer bubble wrap so this one corner is all messed up (shown in the photo). I got one of the better ones but I saw other reviews that got worse copy's. I'm still giving this 5 stars because the book is everything I wanted it to be an more but Amazon work on you packaging, you're ruining the product before I can!!

By Caitlin C. on November 2, 2021
I was so excited to get this, as I'm a huge fan. I didn't know what to expect and it's gorgeous! The art is even better in person and my toddler loved all the colors when he looked at it. So, so worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of modern love with ancient characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2021
I don't usually read graphic novels but my friend who I highly respect raved about this retelling of Persephone and Hades. And because I trust her reviews and do like the retelling of what initially is a pretty chilling Greek myth (the irony of making it a love story must have the Greek gods turning in their graves and as a woman, there is some pleasure I take in that) is always a curiosity to me. So I bought the book thinking at least the artwork is different and beautiful capturing women as we see ourselves. And I can recommend the book for that itself, this is definitely done through the female gaze which is refreshing. And now I can't help but think I should read more graphic novels by women to see more of this female gaze in romance with pictures. As for the story, well as many others have said and I will reiterate, it was a fantastic modern retelling of the Persephone and Hades myth. I was devasted at the end because yeah, we have all been there girl, every step of the way. I am looking forward to the second book and preordered. It's so simple, yet so new, fresh, and compelling as a woman reading this. I can highly recommend it to all women I know even if you've never read a graphic novel or don't particularly like romance. It's still worth it as a story of modern love with ancient characters.
