About the authors
"Jack Campbell" is the pseudonym for John G. Hemry, a retired Naval officer (and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis). As Jack Campbell, he writes The Lost Fleet series of military science fiction novels, as well as the Beyond the Frontier continuation of The Lost Fleet, and The Lost Stars series (a spin-off of The Lost Fleet). He has also written the Stark's War series and the Sinclair/"JAG in space" series, and has written many shorter stories featuring space opera, fantasy, time travel, and alternate history. Many of these stories can be found in the three Jack Campbell ebook anthologies. He lives with his wife (the Indomitable S) and three children (two of whom are autistic) in Maryland.

if you didn't want to do 6 why didn't you just stop with Geary escorting the dancer back to midway checking on how they were doing to going back home and calling it a day. a 4 book series stopping there would have been better then a promised 6 book series that leaves you hanging at 6 with no conclusion
Thanks for Nothing Disgusted
About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

So, once again, you get the rather impressive space battles, with the additional twists that this time looks more like a civil war and like having "Black Jack" fighting against himself. You also get a little taste of covert operations, whether of the subversive kind or of some totally destructive and ultra-secret military program that our heroes have to fight against. Finally, you also get a couple of high profile losses among the Lost Fleet leaders and associates and a couple of pinches of aliens thrown in: a few allusions to "the Kicks" and the fate of their super-battleship, and more direct involvement of the poetic "Dancers" and their fantastic piloting skills.
Also, a couple of features which I found "overdone" in previous episodes and which grated a bit are significantly toned down in this volume. One is the somewhat lame bantering between Black Jack and his female associates. The other one is about the personal intrigues and relationships within the Fleet, which I could not help finding bland and somewhat artificial in previous episodes.
Two additional things need to be notes perhaps. The first is that it is somewhat preferable to have read the previous volumes in the series to fully understand what is going on. The second is that this book is good, but however certainly not the best in the series, if only because there is little in it that is original. It is essentially the same tried and tested formula which is applied with a few little tweaks and, once again, quite successfully. So, if you liked the initial volumes of the Series, then you will like this one also. Four stars

All in all, an absolutely brilliant novel, nothing less. I have enjoyed every single one of Jack Campbell's novel that I have read, and I would advise anyone who has an interest in space military novels to read them. If you do wish to read them, I would suggest starting with "The Lost Fleet Dauntless" as it is the first novel set in this world (figuratively speaking of course, I mean it is in space after all)

The only criticism, is a surprising mistake. The dark ships can perform much better than the ordinary ships because they have no people on board so can use excessive acceleration etc. However Admiral Bloc is on one ship, although a virtual prisoner, and is still alive. I expected that the first time the AIs needed the additional acceleration and performance they would have sacrificed their human passengers. After all they think nothing of killing civilians just to gain a tactical advantage. A minor hiccup in an otherwise well considered enemy.
