"A wonderful exploration of the past and the future and, most importantly, of what it means to be present in the here and now. Full of the love of words, the love of family, and the love of falling in love, The Lost and Found Bookshop is a big-hearted gem of a novel that will satisfy and entertain readers from all walks of life. Lovely!"—Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing In The Rain
In this thought-provoking, wise and emotionally rich novel, New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs explores the meaning of happiness, trust, and faith in oneself as she asks the question, "If you had to start over, what would you do and who would you be?"
There is a book for everything . . .
Somewhere in the vast Library of the Universe, as Natalie thought of it, there was a book that embodied exactly the things she was worrying about.
In the wake of a shocking tragedy, Natalie Harper inherits her mother’s charming but financially strapped bookshop in San Francisco. She also becomes caretaker for her ailing grandfather Andrew, her only living relative—not counting her scoundrel father.
But the gruff, deeply kind Andrew has begun displaying signs of decline. Natalie thinks it’s best to move him to an assisted living facility to ensure the care he needs. To pay for it, she plans to close the bookstore and sell the derelict but valuable building on historic Perdita Street, which is in need of constant fixing. There’s only one problem–Grandpa Andrew owns the building and refuses to sell. Natalie adores her grandfather; she’ll do whatever it takes to make his final years happy. Besides, she loves the store and its books provide welcome solace for her overwhelming grief.
After she moves into the small studio apartment above the shop, Natalie carries out her grandfather’s request and hires contractor Peach Gallagher to do the necessary and ongoing repairs. His young daughter, Dorothy, also becomes a regular at the store, and she and Natalie begin reading together while Peach works.
To Natalie’s surprise, her sorrow begins to dissipate as her life becomes an unexpected journey of new connections, discoveries and revelations, from unearthing artifacts hidden in the bookshop’s walls, to discovering the truth about her family, her future, and her own heart.

About the author

I like to believe I am the person my dogs think I am.
I phone my parents every day, as they are elderly and adorable, and they read me stories every day of my freakishly normal childhood. I was a writer before I learned to read, by creating scribbles on paper and dictating the stories to my saintly mother. You can see examples here: https://plus.google.com/u/1/photos/104585203815605467940/albums/5587379107269629729?banner=pwa&partnerid=pwrd1.
Untold eons later, I still read and write everyday and I've gotten very good at it. I live in a ridiculously gorgeous place in the world--an island in Puget Sound, Washington where we have a lot of the same flowers you grow in the UK. But bigger slugs. Much bigger slugs.
I have lots more to tell you, so please join me on Facebook and check out pictures of my dogs and tell me what's on your mind. https://www.facebook.com/susanwiggs

Here there is much to admire, especially depiction of the profound sense of loss at the death of someone so close. The spirit of Natalie's remarkable mother movingly makes its presence felt throughout all that is to come. Then there is Natalie's grandfather, struggling so doggedly against the dementia causing him to become so "frayed round the edges". In fact several people here greatly appeal - especially resourceful builder Peach Gallagher and his delightful little daughter Dorothy.
Yes, so much is so good, but some readers may have doubts about certain other aspects. Here is a novel at its best with feet firmly on the ground. Sadly it ventures into increasingly fanciful contrivances - not least with the introduction of a character who completely fails to convince.
From the start the outcome is predictable, but impact would be greater if reached by a route that did not stray from reality.

Natalie has good job, and is successful but when she overhears what her colleagues think of her, she's overwhelmed. When she receives some tragic news, her world changes overnight from successful business woman to carer for her Grandfather and family business owner.
Peach comes into her life when she needs him, he's got his own problems to deal with but he finds himself drawn to the kind woman and her Grandfather, can he put his own rules to one side and take a chance?
An absolutely wonderful book and one which I'll read often.

It seems that all the characters look good in this book.
The ending is so soapy and cheesy - everyone ends up doing well in life and Peach proposes to Natalie after their first night together and knowing each other for a couple of months only - and no, they are not in their 20s and he already went through a divorce once...
