The subjects include a wood duck, an iguana, a turtle, a goose, a goat, a Dalmatian, and a cow, among others. From chameleons to eels, chickadees to macaws, and badgers to butterflies, each of the 50 featured creatures in Ehlert's latest offering sports distinctive markings, from stripes and rings to the plenty of spots mentioned in the title. Each spread features a beautiful collage illustration of an animal, accompanied by a poem of four short, catchy lines. Some of the verse is relatively generic: “A giraffe's neck / is so tall / that it towers / over all.” Still, each selection includes a basic zoology concept: “A moth's / flight / awaits / moonlight.” More consistent is the appealing art, which makes amazing use of color, shape, and texture on clean, white double-page spreads. This is most successful as a vibrant, general book about animals for the very young rather than as a primer on camouflage, but a short author's note does add more scientific facts about the menagerie's markings. Children will enjoy paging through and identifying the multitude of brilliantly hued animals that make up this visual zoo. Preschool-Grade 1. --Andrew Medlar

Great for the youngest animal lovers

Lots of Spots is a superb collection of animals that young ones will enjoy paging through time and again. The 50 plus mammals, birds, fish and reptiles are all rendered in the artists signature collage style and seem to actually leap off the page. The rhymes range from the whimsical to the informative and back again, providing a nice accompaniment to each illustration.

While this is a great book for a preschooler to sit down and share with mom and dad, I wish that each page would have been less crowded so the book could have then been more effectively used for group sharing. The white background is perfect for these illustrations, giving them stark contrast. The sheer number of them per spread sometimes lessens their impact. Some spreads are perfect in that they feature one or two animals, while one two page spread crams in six birds along with their poems. The ending is perfect with a long neck giraffe extended over two pages.

I of course do not possess this author's superior artistic judgement and I am sure this book will find plenty of fans. It's whimsical tone and superb illustrations will mark it as a stand out for toddlers, preschoolers, and even early elementary students. I just can't help wishing it would have been organized a bit differently.
