Different and yet some things are always going to be the same...especially when it comes to family! As is often the case, I'm reluctant to watch Comedy because it can be 1) Stupidity, 2) Copy Cat silly for brain dead, 3) Predictable, just plain ole pitiful. However, Love & Marriage was none of these - at least - not so you would want to pull your hair out. Yes, somethings were "the usual suspects"...such as a bit of cookie-cutter definition of (grown up) children; although not to the point of trite. Yet, from the beginning I thought this would be good fun because it had that iconic undertone of "When Harry Met Sally" (which remained by all time favorite move-story for a very long time). The storyline of "When Harry Met Sally" is still up there, however, I've matured in real-life and moved on from "chic-flicks" (so to speak). Therefore, I was glad to see the opening scene (similar to "When Harry Met Sally") did not define the whole series (maybe it might be considered a grown up version). The "Love & Marriage" series is very funny, witty and poignant, yet not a downer about a mature woman retiring and discovering, without her job, she can see/take note that much of her life has been lived for others who didn't/don't appreciate all that she gives/shared/devoted to them. Wait...this wife, mother, grandmother is not bitter or even angry...she is contemplative. She wonders "Is this all there is - to me? What do I want? Do I want to change? Must I change to find happiness?" Moreover, "Will leaving my lazy, unaffectionate, grumpy husband be the best change; even if it means breaking up what everyone thinks is a perfect and happy family (especially my 3 grown up children). Is it me...or them? Must I choose?" Thankfully "Love & Marriage" does not become a "put all the answers in a basket, wrap nicely with a cute ending. The "Love & Marriage" series is good stuff; serious, funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming comedy-drama as everyone's life spills over into each other's to define and perhaps redefine the meaning of "Love & Marriage" in real life. peace.
