Full of simmering suspense and intrigue
Liz Talbot is a modern Southern belle: she blesses hearts and takes names. She carries her Sig 9 in her Kate Spade handbag, and her golden retriever, Rhett, rides shotgun in her hybrid Escape. When her grandmother is murdered, Liz high-tails it back to her South Carolina island home to find the killer. But when her police-chief brother shuts her out of the investigation, she opens her own. Then her long-dead best friend pops in and things really get complicated. As more folks turn up dead, Liz must use more than just her wits and charm to keep her family safe, chase down clues from the hereafter, and catch a psychopath before he catches her.

Author Susan Boyer has nailed the flavor of both location and Southern attitude for her Liz Talbot character. I "know" these people without ever having met a single one of them. Their lifestyles are so true to the Southern way of thinking, talking, and behaving that it was like I had wandered into their homes and businesses. It is very, very difficult for an author to get that precise Southern aura down on the printed page. Most often they wander too far toward the syrup-sweet direction and that isn't realistic. The characters here were simply normal people and that basic foundation made the mystery aspect of the novel work. By choosing to place her activity on such a restricted area of geography Boyer set herself a daunting task of making the motive for the mystery feasible. You might think that preserving an isolated geographical way of life was unrealistic, but I'm here to say it was completely believable. Anybody with an interest in preserving their traditions will understand how fighting against unwanted change could cause passions to run so high that it could lead to murder.
The writers voice used for the characters rings perfectly true. The siblings (Blake, Merry, and Liz) are absolutely spot on in their interactions with each other. Their parents and neighbors are likewise well written. The motive for the murder may seem to be somewhat insubstantial, but only if you've never watched people fight to maintain the lifestyle which is important to them. And preserving the pristine ecology and living conditions of the island of Stella Maris, South Carolina, was shown to be of paramount importance in this novel. Even the smallest town contains secrets the residents want to keep hidden. The same thing applied here. Liz Talbot is a modern character and there were a few times when I was afraid the author would allow Liz to bolt away from her and engage in my idea of unrealistic behavior. I'm really glad to say that each time Ms Boyer reigned the character back in, made her seriously utilize her training as a private investigator, and got her back on track toward solving all the various mysteries she was confronted with. The single criticism I have is that there were times when there were so many characters involved that I had a hard time keeping track of who was who and why they were present. There is a list provided in the beginning of the book of Stella Maris residents, but until you meet them individually that list doesn't help you much. After I had met them I really didn't want to be turning back and forth in my Kindle to keep a check on who was who. Maybe that was laziness on my part except I expected each character to be distinct enough for me to visualize them without going to that type of exceptional effort.
The quite nice surprise element in this novel was Colleen, the spirit guide. This type of additional element can usually make me be constantly on the look-out for gimmicky situations which give a novel a totally unrealistic aspect. In this case I think the part Colleen played was given just enough weight because she was not in the scenes so much that all the activity relied on her presence. She was an unusual character written in a sensitive manner and it worked. Ms Boyer is obviously an author who thinks her plots through all the way to their conclusions. I appreciate that.
If there is another novel in the Liz Talbot series, I will be very glad to read that book also. I like the natural voice this author uses. I like the way she places her characters within their locations in such a realistic way. I like that she doesn't over-describe anything, and she resisted the temptation to put in the recipe for chicken potpie. Two hearty thumbs up from me!
Liz Talbot grew up on Stella Maris—a residential island near Charleston, SC accessed only by ferry. She has lived in Greenville, SC for a number of years where she and her boyfriend, Nate Andrews, operate a private investigation company. She gets a call to return home as her grandmother has died. But once she arrives home, her brother Blake, the chief of police of Stella Maris, informs her that her grandmother was actually murdered. Not only that, but Grandmom left Liz her beach cottage. The town council of Stella Maris has tried to shoot down plans for resort development and perhaps this is the reason for the murder. “Much of the land on our twenty-four-square-mile paradise had been in the same families for generations—folks who cherished our small town and were terrified of timeshares. Others look at our wide beaches and saw the potential for enormous wealth. Zoning regulations protected the island from exploitation. Still, the town stood one town council election and one real estate deal away from becoming its own worst nightmare.” But could the murder be something more basic like jealousy or hate?
Liz has her hands full with the investigation. But she also must deal with her future. Does she move to Stella Maris? Does she give up her home in Greenville? What happens to her business, Talbot and Andrews, and her boyfriend and partner, Nate? The book will also introduce the reader to many characters who will become regulars in Boyer’s novels including Liz’s family, her godmother Grace Sullivan, Charleston cop Sonny Ravenel, and a host of other locals.
Boyer has a love for the low country, and it shines through the pages of Lowcountry Boil. “Stella Maris is a sultry, wind-swept Eden…The island both nurtured and seduced us. My family’s roots sank deep into the sand and anchored us here. Our souls are salt-water cured.”
This is good stuff and I am a new fan of Susan M. Boyer and Liz Talbot.
First Liz receives an urgent message from her best friend from High School days, Colleen. Colleen says, "Liz, Come home." Now that may not sound critical but when you realize that Colleen died during their Junior year in school...well. Liz accepts this message in stride as haunts are accepted in her life on the island of Stella Maris.
Shortly thereafter the cell phone rings, and it is brother Blake, Chief of Police on Stella Maris and he says, "Its Gram." Liz tells Nate she has to go and she grabs some clothes and her dog, Rhett and off she drives. Nate is concerned but they will keep in touch.
Blake confides to Liz that he suspects Gram was murdered. He also instructs her to stay out of his investigation and keep it quiet. This was the only part of the book that strained my credulity. A private investigator not investigating, especially when she inherits and learns the death is not an accident or natural? This, however, was the only time the book made me blink.
The truth is Liz has plenty to investigate as Colleen soon alerts her to. The island is rife with political conflict, politics, domestic abuse, contract killers and more. This book was action packed.
Many many strands of persons lives need to be woven until Liz finds a tight weave. The location of the island was inviting, the characters were well drawn and you feel like or dislike through the actions and dialog. The pace of the story made it all the more compelling. I enjoyed this murder mystery.
