Having owned several other tonneau covers and having installed numerous other bolt-on accessories from many manufacturers over the years, I feel qualified to make this review. My first impressions out of the box were "less than satisfied". 1) Poorly packaged by the manufacturer resulting in scuff marks on the cover material. Not huge, but I did buy a NEW product and expect such. 2) Although videos exist and it's pretty self explanatory if you've ever done very many install projects, the written/printed instructions are very low quality (print quality) and illustrations are poor. 3) The rail ends were not finished. They had very shoddy cut marks where they were cut from stock. These were shipped with very rough ends and metal burs on each end with missing finish. I ended up having to file down this rough ends/corners and hitting them with some black paint. Also, there were lots of metal pieces throughout the packaging from where the materials were cut and/or drilled during manufacturing, some embedded into the hook and loop fasteners. 4) Speaking of hook and loop fasteners, the side that is adhered to the rails, was done so poorly and coming up in several locations. I ended up having to heat up the strips and re-adhere to the rails. After all these items were addressed, the cover was installed and has a decent almost-custom fit. I feel the sealing edges could have been better, the quality of craftsmanship was sub-standard, and I had to do a lot of "extra" to make this acceptable. Based on this experience alone, I would not buy another Lund product. But having owned other Lund products, I can say that this is not their usual quality. Not sure if their QC is slipping, or this is a sign of the future of Lund, or just a poorly produced singular product. Whatever the case, I'm not impressed. If time would permit and it wasn't a large hassle, I'd send this unit back. I don't have that luxury as I am leaving for a road trip soon.
This was installed on a 2005 Silverado 6.5' bed. Removal of the "extra" sealing strip/seal is required for your rails to install correctly. If you are working on one of these generation trucks, this will make sense to you during install. This is denoted in the install instructions, but these are supposed to be "custom made for your specific vehicle", which they are not. Again, not a big deal, just note worthy in my opinion.
Packaging was not damaged, arrived on schedule, with no issue from the distributor.
05/02/17 Update - Just completed a 2,750 mile trip across 4 states in HIGH winds, wind-driven rain and snow. I am happy to report that the cover did a very good job of keeping it out. I had zero issues with function over the whole trip and never had any water/snow/dust intrusion that was the fault of the cover (a very small amount made it in through the tailgate-to-bed gap area). The cross bars did a great job of keeping the snow load under control when I was parked overnight at a hotel. My original review was 3 stars, but after performance testing it on the road, I added another star. A 5th star would be in order had the original review items not have been a factor. I feel confident that this product will perform as well for the near future at least, maybe longer.
This is my second Lund Tonneau cover purchased on Amazon, first was for my 2011 Tacoma, so I thought I'd write a review and show the installed product on my 2003 crew cab long bed Duramax. Installed by myself in about two hours, most of that time was for adjustments. The tracks have to sit slightly above the tailgate and cab side of the bed, but the middle section at the wheel wells wanted to sit lower, not what you want. It took a little effort, but once aligned, it fit perfect, just make sure all the clamps are in the same location as all the other clamps (i.e. same teeth position). Also purchased the ProGrip 850760 Bull Rings to help make the bed a little more water/snow tight. This cover has a good seal for the tailgate, I pulled it out with a wood paint stick before latching the cover down as it wants to naturally point towards the cab, but seals tighter facing the bumper and will keep moisture out better in this position (see photo), I'm hoping over time it'll shape itself here so I don't have to adjust every time I open the tailgate. The cover itself fits better than the Tacoma, actually covers and seals over the rail gaps past the Velcro, and sits on the bed to repel moisture better.
One latch broke just a few days after installation, but I contacted Lund and they sent me a replacement part free-of-charge.
Update: Almost 10 Years and 185,000 miles later it still works great! The elastic straps that hold the buckle are getting slightly stretched out and a little brittle, I'm not sure how much longer they will hold out. The tarp is starting to show some small cracks where the hinges are and the seals are pretty much gone. It might not be completely water tight if I went through a car wash now but it still keeps the rain out.
I'm considering checking out how well Lund would honor the "Limited Lifetime Warranty" for the cover since it's cracking slightly at the hinges.
I'm still very satisfied with this purchase. I take the cover off and put it on several times each month. All the clamps still work fine and hold it tightly to the truck bed. A friend bought another brand of the same type cover last year because he liked the functionality of mine. His is already curling up at the corners and flaps like a flag in the wind.
Update: I have now owned this for right at 5 years and 110,000 miles. All the stuff I said at first is still true.
I have not replaced the seals, although they could use it, but it still doesn't leak. Even in heavy rain or on the interstate.
Folded forward it takes up about the same amount of room as a toolbox would. I have driven with it flipped forward and latched many times at interstate speeds and while it does lift some, it has always held. When closed, it doesn't flap any more now than when new. (it doesn't really flap much at all)
I have had several people who bought one after seeing and using mine.
I have had it off the truck many times. It folds and stands neatly in the corner of the garage. It's never been off for more than a day or two though.
My 5 year old daughter has gotten on top of it and crawled around a couple of times recently with no effect and she weighs about 45 lbs. I have had multiple items that punched into it pretty hard while I was driving (such as bicycle handlebars)and they did not puncture or damage it either. I even drove off without latching it one time and it flew up into the air and came almost completely off the truck without damage. So it can stand up to quite a bit of abuse.
I think this thing may just last me another 100,000 miles. I am so glad I didn't spend more on a hard cover that would be much harder to work with.
I have had this on my truck for a few months now and have been very satisfied. The day I got it I installed it in about 15 minutes (from getting the box off the porch to admiring it on the truck). It fits very well, looks nice, and comes with extra seals which I didn't even use.
The next weekend we left on a 600 mile trip and put all our stuff in the bed. It poured down rain so hard for about an hour that I finally pulled over because of visibility. When the rain subsided I checked the bed and there was not a drop of water back there! I have since taken it through a couple of wand pressure washes and haven't seen water in there from that either.
The tarp does slightly flap at highway/interstate speeds but most all soft tops will. This one isn't bad about it at all. The tarp is thick and well supported enough that I have sat a few things on top of it for a minute or two (the heaviest being my emergency kit which is about 12" x 18" and weighs about 10 lbs.)
I installed a Bully tailgate lock at the same time to make everything more secure. I guess if someone really wanted in they'd just cut the top and get in that way, but if you really want maximum security, go for a hard top.
I wanted convenience, things to be dry & hidden, and the ability to take it off easily by myself when I need to use the bed for something bigger. This one is lightweight, can be placed on or taken off in literally about 2 minutes by yourself, and I can drive with it open and only covering 1/3 of the bed.
The only thing that would make me happier is if someone gave it to me for free, but I'll gladly buy one for my next truck too. My brother, after seeing mine, is about to order one for his truck as well.
