Idris as a conflicted, imperfect detective savant. Great stuff. Be advised: Pretty dark.
Caveat: Season 3 wrapped last summer, and that's apparently all there is or will be. So there may already be a "complete set" edition now; haven't looked.
Our only complaint: We want more Luther!
An aside: One of our best tech purchases (for under $100) ever was a no-region DVD player. About 90-percent of the sets we've purchased have been UK series not widely available, or available at all, in US format.
Even for those boxed sets that have a US format counterpart, the lower price of the UK sets has already paid for our player several times over.

A major disappointment which tested credibility

Now I confess I gave up after watching the first series. I liked the first episode, but then as it turned into a series of even more savage and bizarre attacks against women (I think the man keeping his victim alive in a freezer unit was where I threw in the towel)I started to enjoy the snappy dialogue, cinematography and fine acting less and less. I did try and watch another couple of episodes after-almost the first series but it was a struggle. I don't get it? What is pleasurable about watching graphic violence against women who are portrayed as defenceless and then counterpointing it with an unrealistic story line of a female psychopath who is stalking the main character like an Iago to Othello? Too much of the plots defy credibility. It depends on even increasingly far fetched ultra violent hooks to keep you engaged. Me, I just felt sicker and sicker. Think how effective is a shower after a swim in this human sewer and its fiction to boot. Luther the main protagonist also loses credibility. He has regular temper tantrums in full public display including in his work; every cop in the shop would know his business-there would be no need for some special branch type internal investigator (who looks as if they accidently woke up as Smiley in 2010)to be involved. Case closed-obvious the man has oversteeped the line and then some. Then there is the story line of the moral dilemma of Luther aiding the paedophile in the first episode fall to his likely death. No he survives. Really? Should Luther have saved him so he could go on trial. Then there is the problem of engaging with the shenanigans of the relationship of Luther, his wife (she boffed someone else while they were having time apart)and the triangle with her new paramour. A story line that also lacked credible oxygen-dysfunction celebrated in the beauty of the protagonists, supposed intelligence and sense of entitlement- all excusing the bad behaviour and seedy goings on between them. So although it is well acted, superb photography, intelligent dialogue-it was too gratuitous in its portrayal of vicious death and torture.I'm turfing my copy-don't need it.

Great although very dark and violent series and many of the reviews of this 2 season box set testify to that. I have found the whole essay extremely entertaining and riveting viewing.

Just be aware that although currently this set is pretty cheap as I write, the box set of the first three seasons is also selling at a good price and for just a little bit more you can also buy the four season box set ---- I bought the 2 season set early and found the series addictive and so later on also bought the 4 season set as that was cheaper than buying the further individual seasons. Avoid my mistake and go for the longer version if you're sure that you're going to enjoy the series.

The 2 season box set is 579 minutes long and has English subtitles. Extras are a feature 'Luther The World Of A True Maverick' which is also included in the 4 season box set. Nevertheless this is tremendous entertainment and superb value and certainly the BBC showing that anything the Americans or the Scandinavians can do the BBC can do it just as well if not better.

Very original detective TV show. Gives us a glimpse of East London for a change (yes, we know how the City looks like, we are thrilled to see a part of London rarely used in TV shows, like you need a Visa to go there and I don't mean the credit card). Luther is a police officer with his own methods to put it mildly. He often crosses the line, whoch gets him into trouble. He even becomes friend with Alice, a charming serial killer, a quite unusual turns of events but then... are the criminal and the police officer really so far apart here? They both don't follow the rules of law and order and they both have their own morals. Luther and Alice feel that they act for a greater good. You may not share their definition of a greater good but you can't dismiss them as dangerous lunatics.

When I heard Luther season 3 was on and people were going crazy for it i wondered what the interest was. I had never seen it so decided to quickly catch up so I could tune into season 3! OMG for the very episode I was hooked. Can't believe I missed this first time round when it aired! Although season 1 my favourite all 3 are mesmerising. Idris Elba is such a brilliant under rated actor. Unbeknown to me he also co-produces Luther as well. A crime series at it finest. Now that I've seen season 3 it's on my wish list. I hope they make a lot more of Luther it will be a shame not too.

Flipping best viewing my husband and I have watched in a Loooong time! Each and every episode has you spell bound and on the edge of your seat, leaving you wanting more. Easy to follow, plots are very different to the normal and the pace is quick and unlaboured, allowing for lots of twists and turns. The actors and actresses are really well selected for their parts. Series 3 is also out now and is an absolute must to add to the box set.

Luther is a British psychological crime drama and one of the best bits of TV in the last few years. Idris Elba has created an amazing character in Luther.

The DVDs themselves don't really have a lot of extras. As for the series itself, I watched the 2nd series on TV and loved the show so much that I bought this box set to finally see the 1st series and learn some of the back-story. If I had watched this show in chronological order I doubt I would've carried on after the first series, which was a HUGE disappointment compared to the second. The 2nd & 3rd series are some of the best British TV can offer and I would highly recommend, the 1st is laughable in comparison.
