This book is a lively tale full of humor and familiar farm animals. Ma MacDonald is at the end of her wits because the farm animals are ruining her catering business. There are goats in the goulash, a snake in the shake, a noodle in the strudel, and a muskrat in the mustard. Lots of alliteration, onomatopoeia, and nonsense rhymes fill the pages.

Young children are urged to find and identify the different animals while they laugh at their antics. This would be a fun book to read aloud at a party or for an older sibling to read to a younger child. I did not give the book five stars because the text was difficult to read even when enlarged on my Kindle Fire. For that reason, I would suggest the paperback version with much larger font size. Recommended for ages two through seven.

This is a funny book with funny pictures, which will cause children to laugh out loud. It is a take-off on “Old MacDonald had a Farm.” The pages are filled with clever rhymes and startling colorful pictures. Ma MacDonald has a restaurant on her farm with lots and lots of delicious dishes. The animals also think so, so they get into every dish and are under-foot. Children will delight seeing and hearing how many different kinds of animals act and the many different kinds of foods.

Whew, this is a very entertaining story, kind of Old MacDonald, Dr. Seuss, I Spy books all rolled up in one. Thank goodness Ma MacDonald finally makes it out of there...she did, right? I can't WAIT to get a copy for my elementary school library - the kids adore EVERY one of Beckstrand's books, (we have multiple copies of nearly all of them and they are frequently on hold). This tale will delight them all. Very entertaining story, and fun illustrator.

I got a free copy of "Ma MacDonald" for review. It's a play on "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" that gets more and more frenetic as more and more animals invade the scene, each making a mess of a food item whose name sounds in some way like the animal's. You could go through the book with a kid in a couple of ways: either picking out all of the animals in the illustrations as their names come up, or reading really fast to emphasize all of the playing with sounds. Young kids will love it.

Beckstrand is a great author of children's books. I've quite enjoyed all of the ones I've read.
