Mafia King: The DiLustro Arrangement, Book 2 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Santino is my king. My lover. My husband.
He’s the head of the Cavallo crime family, and the moment he choked my vows from me, my life was bound to his.
I’m done fighting my fate, until I hear two rumors, and I’m shaken to the core.
One rumor about the past - that I wasn’t the first bride Santino took.
Another about the future - a new bride is about to be taken.
Changing the old ways is like dousing the flames of hell with tears.
But I married the devil himself, and when I vowed to obey, I lied.

A compelling story, to start, and, boy oh boy, does CD Reiss have a compelling story. Reiss begins where she left off in Mafia Bride, with Santino and Violetta facing what could be an irreparable fracture in their new marriage. As Reiss established in Book 1 of this trilogy, though, Santino's feelings about his wife versus his feelings about her sister are but one problem they face. His empire is also under attack, and Santino increasingly finds himself defending (and protecting) what is his.
Whereas Mafia Bride established who Santino and Violetta are, Mafia King presses the gas and sends the plot into overdrive. This book is fast-paced, moving quickly from one scene to the next. At the same time, though, Reiss continues to build Santino and Violetta, both as individual characters and together as a formidable couple. If Violetta occasionally comes across as preternaturally mature considering how cloistered her life has been, you can forgive the leap because she has been forced to grow up FAST since getting married to her mafia king.
Which brings me to the second key to a five-star review: compelling characters who show agency. Santino and Violetta demand your attention and refuse to relinquish it. The only time either of them appears weak, it comes as a result of manipulation from another character, a violation of trust, of omertá. Watching Violetta come into her own because of Santino's devotion and love is a wonderful thing to read.
You also have to have solid wordsmithing, and my goodness, does CD Reiss know how to write a mafia romance. Santino is dark, demanding, and domineering. He likes filthy talk and filthy sex, and he likes to love wholly. The intended light to his dark, Violetta surprises him here. She shows him not just what is in her bloodline, but all the possibilities their mafia marriage has.
And then there is that ending. CD Reiss leaves you hanging in a way that makes you scream. I need the third book NOW. NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW.
Hit up the comments and let me know what you think of Santino, Violetta, and that ending.

What I wanted to highlight is how Violetta is such a breath of fresh air amongst other 'promised' girls I've read in Kindle. She's not just fierce when she needed, but her fight to free other girls as future "debt repayments" is commendable.
I want to say more but I'll just save my thoughts aboutthis series until after I read the last book.
At the end of the first installment Santino and Violetta are clashing over a secret Santino's been keeping. Watching them work through this issue, especially since Violetta's assumptions about the secret are far-fetched - was compelling. I didn't understand why Santino wouldn't just come clean. Things were illuminated. Santino doesn't believe he's a good man or that he deserves Violetta. It's up to Violetta to prove him wrong and to show him there were made for each other. She only has to do it before an impending mafia war.
Mafia King was equally as riveting as Mafia Bride even if it wasn't quite as action-packed. Getting a bead on Santino - his life philosophies, etc. - was exciting. Seeing him and Violetta work at building a solid foundation for their life together was satisfying. And that ending? Killer! I'm even more anxious for the final installment than I was for this one. ;)
