About the author

Born in 1925 in Peru, anthropologist Carlos Castaneda wrote a total of 15 books, which sold 8 million copies worldwide and were published in 17 different languages. In his writing, Castaneda describes the teaching of Don Juan, a Yaqui sorcerer and shaman. His works helped define the 1960's and usher in the New Age movement. Even after his mysterious death in California in1998, his books continue to inspire and influence his many devoted fans.

Here is the mature Castaneda, at his most earnest and academic, publishing information which he had held back for years while he considered the question of revealing a traditionally secret knowledge. Having decided to publish, he presents a truly revolutionary perspective on wellbeing and the intended purpose of our individual life, peppered with conversations with Carlos’ astoundingly direct mentor, the nagual don Juan Matus.
Traditionally, the magical passes were tailored to the individual, so before they could be published, it was necessary to innovate a generalised form for each pass. A formidable task in itself, that reveals the calibre and dedication of a anthropologist who has too often been cynically dismissed by armchair experts. Having re-engineered the energy exercises, Carlos named the body of revised movements “Tensegrity”, to emphasise their integrated structural functions of dynamic tension and compression.
The Toltec perspective is not easily or quickly assimilated, simply because it is culturally unprecedented ; having no familiar reference points. Yet gradually the understanding assembles itself, as if by some osmosis of the mind.
One of the key objectives of the magical passes is reclaiming personal energy which has become stagnant over our years of wear&tear. The implication is that those who persist with the magical passes can, by re-distributing disused energy, achieve the vigour and youthfulness exhibited by the nagual Juan and his party of warrior-travellers.
The passes themselves lead you to their correct form, because they embody the intent of generations of warrior-travelers. No expensive miracle tonics or preposterous beliefs required – just do the work.
Within chapters on themes of different energy types and functions, relevant physical movements are described and photographically illustrated.
For the perceptive, personal verification of the effects of each exercise is subtly immediate. No years of preparation required, simply perform the exercises and the results begin.
There is a companion DVD available from Amazon, “Carlos Castaneda’s Tensegrity”, where yet more passes are demonstrated by the “chacmools”, who were personally trained by Carlos to conduct tensegrity workshops. The DVD illustrates the velocity of movements and the application of energetic thrust, and (despite the rather wooden delivery) is a worthwhile addition to this excellent and profoundly important book.

It has passes, also known as the system of Tensegrity in it, which are to be executed by a practitioner. This is a good thing for many fans of Carlos's books as sometimes they have no way of categorizing themselves: witch - too dangerous; sorcerer - too wishy-washy; mage - too exalter and fantastic; warrior - who's to say? etc. "Tensegrity practitioner" is easier. In any case there is a great virtue in just doing the passes in the sequence that you remember without worrying about the exact order - after all they are supposed to fit you personally.
I would also purchase the DVD's (which I have reviewed elsewhere) but the DVD don't have all the forms presented in the book, so an alternative is to find an exercise group in your area. In any case, whatever is your way, it is good to start doing the passes little by little, and increase the time spent depending on your physical condition. Done right, they are a great help in several ways - they give you an increased sense of vitality, and also increase the already heightened awareness, thus a greater intensity.
Carlos' was a true mastermind by bringing this system to life. It took care of so many otherwise opened ends in his life and carrier. It is a great inheritance from a great writer...and a good man.

The general claim of the book ,then,is that by practicing these excercises we can alter our perceptions without resorting to the use of psychotropic plants etc...
How succesful a practitioner will be in accomplishing this certainly cannot be guaranteed ,but for those looking for an excercise book with a bizzare twist, featuring routines which will still improve physical fitness , if practised regularly , this is well worth reading.
The excercises are allegedly based upon genuine American Indian shamanic traditions , and seem to represent largely a kind of 'active yoga' with similarities to Tai Chi and , at times , African tribal dances .

I really enjoy reading these series of books, they go far deeper to answering the questions about our purpose than anything else that I have ever read.
