I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Avery and Donovan, along with their family, friends and enemies took us on. It was definitely not a straightforward route, but a bitter sweet route filled with quite a few twists, angst, drama, deceit and so much more. But through all the ups and downs in their life, their love, faith and trust in each other keep strengthening. Don't get me wrong no readers, let me just make it clear, that there were some really dicey moments between those two that had me really frustrated and wanting to be in the room with them for five seconds, to knock some sense into them. I love Donovan Junior's interactions with his baby sister Anya (he is just too cute with her).
Avery's dad Alexander, had me wondering a lot about his motives and wanting to know if he was really trying to sabotage his daughter's relationship with Donovan. Again, did Avery's mom really did what she did with Donovan Junior, and kept it a secret for so long? What, she did not planned on ever acknowledging him as a part of their family? Is Jess for real? I have to give it to you Avery, because you exercised more patience with her than I would. I would have knocked her out from the get go and banned her from my home (just crass and rude).
Is Donovan Junior and Maggie following in Avery and Donovan's footsteps? Will there be a story about Antonio and Carly?
Amarie wrote a detailed, well researched book on the life of deaf adults and children and the pros and cons of hearing aids and the use of American Sign Language. Avery seemed to resent the fact that her father took so long to learn ASL. She was content with living her life as it was until she gave birth to her daughter and wanted to hear her voice. The icing on the cake was Donovan Jr's desire to hear but a stipulation on that desire Avery had to adhere to first.
The story also dealt with PTSD and mental illness through Hayden "Hunter" Flint's story. He was certifiably mental. I don't understand why he was so mad with Donovan, who took the fall for Hunter in the military. This second book started off a little slow and was boring in spots. The chemistry between Avery and Donovan was very hot and they had sex any and everywhere which to me was a bit of a turn-off. I also hated the fact that Avery decided to change up her dream for Beaudelaire, it did not speak too well about her maturity, even though she was hard on Donovan about his being open and true. Regardless of the disagreements they had, they still loved each other and Donovan's voice was the only voice she wanted to hear for the rest of her life.
