These are the kinds of stories we need right now.
While the news is filled with villains and villainy, we do see a few famous heroes now and again. But what about the everyday heroes? The people going out of their way bring a little love into someone else's life? They deserve a time in the spotlight to inspire us all.
Life can be tough—but it helps to know other people have come through hard times with a smile on their face. In Make Your Own Sunshine, Janice Dean shares inspiring stories that will lift your spirit and touch your heart. Good people are all around us doing selfless deeds, from a firefighter who bravely battled for his colleague’s health after 9/11 to a good Samaritan who secretly pays for the coffees of everyone in line behind him. You can’t help but smile hearing about the teacher who cut her hair to make her student feel better. And you may shed a tear when you hear the story of the dad who never missed writing a napkin note for his daughter, including stashing extra notes in case he lost his batter with cancer. From a young man who makes bow ties for dogs waiting to be adopted to an Uber driver who brightened a new mom’s day by helping her buy baby clothes, the heroes in this story will warm your heart and stick in your mind.
Janice has made it her mission to uncover and document these good stories to inspire us and gives us a much-needed boost of optimism. All we have to do is open our minds and our hearts, to look for the light on a cloudy day. Because as she reminds us, if we don’t make our own sunshine—who will?

With the pandemic occurring and the gloom and the doom being told on the news....day in and day out....it is so refreshing to read these stories of hope, inspiration and perseverance. This is a 'feel good' book and will make you smile throughout.
One of my favorites was from a few years ago and was about Alice Mayn from Santa Rosa, CA. 'Teaching Older Dogs new tricks' was the title of the section. Alice rescued older dogs and was fortunate to rescue Lily. My goodness what a dog Lily was and offered so much to Alice in return. She was a Golden Retriever and Lily's Legacy is named after her. What a beautiful place for the older dogs to romp and swim and above all, feel young again...
The book has so many wonderful stories in it which shine a light on helping others. Kindness is infectious, as you know, and one act sets a chain reaction into motion. The author calls this the 'ripple effect'.
A friend of the author, Jen (Nurse Practitioner), told her that 'resilience is only developed through adversity. I choose hope'.' One should also remember that the simplest and most satisfying things in life are free. A kind word, a kind deed can go so far in today's world.
Absolutely loved her bicycle story near the end. What a remarkable birthday gift and amazing how much joy it has brought to her entire family.
Perfect book for these trying times we are living in today. I choose hope, I really do. Uplifting and inspirational..
Most highly recommended.
It is simply a "feel good" book that helps reinforce the belief that people can be really good.
I think it will surprise a lot of liberals to find that the author works for Fox News. Yes, conservatives can be nice, optimistic, kind, and thoughtful people!
