5.0 out of 5 stars This is a really good camera if you can figure it out, works great with Octopi
By Albert Sanchez on April 9, 2021
So I originally bought the non-wide angled version of this cam and wasn't a fan of how zoomed in it looked. Couldn't get my whole printer bed in the frame. Quality was eh (didn't know what I know now...), it seemed to favor the IR mode and then a few days ago, the quality became really pixelated. I had just placed this wide-angled version on order so when it came in and I installed it, I noticed it was still really pixelated.
So I ordered a new ribbon cable and installed that and still didn't fix the issue.

I decided to do some digging on how to set the camera options on, I could find a bunch of forumns and online resources with the commands but couldn't figure out how to apply them properly (I'm a mechanical engineer, not a software engineer). But I finally got the process down so if you are thinking about getting this camera and want to know how to set it up with Octoprint here it is:

-Download PuTTy and SSH into the pi. You can find resources on how to do this. You need the Pi IP address.
-Once you've logged in type: sudo apt update
-It should check if you've got a firmware and/or software package updates (I had 46 that could be upgraded).
-Then type: sudo apt full-upgrade
-It should ask to confirm and then it will update all of them. Might take a few min depending on how many you have. Also you might need to reboot afterwards (sudo reboot).
-When it reboots, you'll have to close PuTTy and start a new session to connect to the Pi again.
-When you've logged back in, type: sudo nano /boot/octopi.txt
-It will then open the text file in blue text, then find (it might be commented out with a #) or add the line: camera_raspi_options="XXXXXXXXXX"

Now the XXXXX field is where you place the commands for the camera options. You can experiment with yours but here is what I set mine to: camera_raspi_options="-x 1920 -y 1080 -fps 30 -sh 50 -awb off -quality 100 -vs -ex auto"

GOODLUCK AND HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE IN THE FUTURE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Streaming on Octoprint - Plug and Play!
By Galen Helgemo on February 12, 2018
I purchased this with the intent to stream video of my 3D printer using Octoprint while my printer sits in the dark abyss of my utility room.

You have to assemble the camera when you first get it, but it's not rocket science (which is good - there aren't instructions included). The screws are just -really- tiny so be careful and don't lose anything. ALSO - make sure you use the correct screws for mounting the camera if you bought it with the stand - I made the mistake of assembling the camera and then realizing I had to switch screws and include the stand in the overall assembly.

The longer ribbon cable works just fine - honestly I think I'd want an even longer one, but the 50 cm provided is sufficient for now.

Once I plugged the ribbon cable into the correct spot on the Raspberry Pi (user error...) it was plug and play. I can't really ask for more. I'm running 640x480 at 10 fps - the camera does support the higher resolutions as stated, but I don't have the bandwith to stream that without huge frame stuttering. I could possibly do it with a hardwire ethernet connection but I'm lazy and I don't need super high quality on the stream.

Now, I personally ordered the camera with the stand. Unfortunately with the camera in its current state, it is quite front heavy and the stand is useless unless you use the adhesive on the bottom. I'm not a huge fan of adhesive bases because I'd like to move the camera around whenever my heart desires, so I went looking for a solution. I printed out this camera base (and modified it to have two additional M3 holes which I modeled as 2.8 mm - that way the screws tap into the PLA I printed the base out): Thingiverse (1460181)

With the base fixed to something heavier, the camera sits just fine now and I get a great shot of my prints in action.
