This is a great collection of fast paced & lurid horror short stories with a heavy emphasis on action and creepy atmosphere. Wild 'horror adjectives' abound with the author sometimes even charmingly creating his own horror words for unique effect. Zagat was one of the top terror pulp writers for the 'weird menace' / 'shudder pulp' magazines that were big sellers in the 1930s & 40s - zines that featured lurid and surprisingly violent horror stories featuring mad scientists, damsels in distress, bizarre creatures, evil cultists and the fearless detectives who dared to take them on. This collection has some GREAT Zagat stories that are well assembled and give a fine introduction to this underrated author's style beginning with the exquisitely creepy 'Cargo From Hell'. If you're a big horror fan but have never sampled the pleasures of the 'weird menace' pulps then this is a great place to start. Those of you who are familiar with the lean and fast paced style of this hidden subgenre will find some of the best examples of it here.
