5.0 out of 5 starsA Scintillating, High Octane Thriller

I haven't read a book that moved with a sense of urgency like this one does in a long time. I got sucked in on the very first page and couldn't put it down until my heart slowed and I reached the conclusion. I'm not much of a gun person but after this I think I've heard of every type used in the military. This story is so well written that you're right there in the middle of the action and watching it play out in front of you. I love when I can get lost in the book and not think about actually reading it. It's obvious that the author has first hand knowledge of the subject matter and I thank him for his service. I've read plenty of military themed books and this one just felt different and fresh. Though very detail oriented you never get bogged down with them as again they put you right there in the middle. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can't wait for the next book in the series. I highly recommend this story to those of you who like your thrillers very fast paced, action packed and believable.

1.0 out of 5 starsDo not force your LGBT views into a book. Leave them out of it
Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2019
I was enjoying the book, until I got to the part where CIA director Styles seduced a female. To add to that as if if it were not bad enough, it got a bit graphic. Was there any need at all for that. No. Bad enough that LGBT agenda is pushed. Now it is in this book. This author could have left it at the CIA director blackmailing the young woman. Simple. He had the her planting drugs and so on. No, he had to bring this into the story. I will never buy another single book from him unless he decides to stop writing in this type of stuff. I have read plenty of books in this genre and have not had to put up with this. I have seen plenty of top notch authors not even include sex in their action thrillers. Sad to see this, especially from a fellow veteran who also led Soldiers into battle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Apparently we were not as thrilled as most readers

Retired US Army Captain Sean Parnell, an Afghan war hero, had a hit with his memoir of real-life experiences entitled “Outlaw Platoon”. According to this book's afterword, for almost a decade Parnell had been thinking about a related fictional account of a “black ops” specialist (Eric Steele herein) who saves the day in a suspenseful thriller of international combat. According to an absolute bevy of glowing reviews, he pulled off that feat with “Man Of War”.

To be a contrarian, we’re not as convinced with this fictional novel debut. The first half of the book was so choppy we were often confused about who was who and what was what. The main plot involved a stolen nuclear warhead, which is neither a unique premise nor particularly credulous. Meanwhile, a sub-plot about a secretly critically ill President, an ambitious VP, and a treacherous and traitorous CIA Director, to us never adequately tied to the rest of the tale – and thus served as a major and unwarranted distraction. The final third of the book finally delivered page-turning suspense, but our reading sessions took a tortuous route to get there. Moreover, extreme violence throughout was not particularly to our liking, nor was the Clancy-like technicalities about the weapons our protagonist seemed to carry in an unlimited supply.

While nothing can detract from this brave soldier’s personal service, nor his efforts to help modern US Veterans as Co-Founder of the American Warrior Initiative, we will not persist if their happens to be a second adventure with Mr. Steele. Compared to the likes of Baldacci’s “black ops” assassin Will Robie, we just don’t find that Parnell as a writer measures up.

The title tells you all you need to know. “Man of War: An Eric Steele Novel.” It reeks of testosterone. This is another Special Forces warrior novel, with clandestine attack forces and all sorts of sneaking around, lying and subversion going on that threatens the safety of nation and/or world. Part of it takes place in and around Washington, part in bad countries you know where. One villain is highly placed in the intelligence community. The other is a former colleague of Eric’s but he’s moved over to the Dark Side after losing his family in a terrorist attack. There’s a stolen nuclear weapon, lots of military type action and gear, explained in excruciating detail, of course there’s some long range shooting, and the action ends with a head to head blow by blow brawl between the Bad Guy and the Good Guy with enough damage to incapacitate them both several times over. Parnell knows his stuff. His first book was a memoir of his work as infantryman in the Afghan War—but there is nothing to distinguish this book from the countless others that keep pouring out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, Very Typical Plot

Same old same old here folks....war vet writes action fiction to capitalize on his fame and rank. How many of these kinds of books have been published in the last few years....must be thousands. Just a lot of page filler with some action baked in, but nothing original and not very interesting. Actually tedious. The author would have been much better off sticking to his successful non-fiction career, as he's a terrible novelist. Also, the $14.99 price is a total ripoff for a first novel of this gendre, especially considering my comments above.

This genre is full of exceptional authors, unfortunately Sean Parnell isn’t one of them.

This book is riddled inconsistencies and inaccuracies, it is also bloated with unnecessary similes. It cracks along at a reasonable pace, but has very little character development, and the action is sometimes hard to follow.

I won’t be buying any more of his fiction books, and would urge those of you interested to look at Jack Carr,
Brad Taylor, Brad Thor and Neil Lancaster books if you like this genre. They are all excellent.
