From the Author
In the middle of the last century, Neville Goddard used ancient Biblical stories to point out how we could improve our lives through a more relaxed, imaginative state of mind. Despite being a popular self-improvement speaker at the peak of his long career, Neville's work has largely been forgotten since his death in 1972. Today, few people interested in spiritual self-development have heard of Neville - although his advice usually seems vastly superior to the many similar self-help teachers that came after him. The hope of the Neville Explains the Bible series - of which this book is a part - is to introduce you to Neville's exceptional ideas, and explore their practical application.
You're probably going to find a lot of relevance in what Neville is saying. Nothing is intended to sound too esoteric. Anybody can use this information effectively. That's because, in Neville's opinion, the Bible wasn't only the greatest spiritual book ever written - it was also the most practical.
Neville would always dismiss any historical discussions surrounding the Old and New Testament as being irrelevant to the larger pragmatic points the Bible makes. He was a master at decoding the Bible so we could actually utilize it in our normal, day-to-day life. Even if you disagree with Neville's unconventional opinions concerning some of these Biblical teachings, you'll almost certainly gain something from the advice he shares.
This particular guide contains some of Neville's most disarming advice, as well as my own commentary on what he's talking about in regards to the mind-body connection. The intention of my commentary is mainly to make you see that Neville's advice isn't complicated or weird.
Just because Neville is using the Bible and Jesus as reference points doesn't mean we have to tiptoe around this material in some special, "religious" way. It makes no sense to do so - we should dive right into the heart of these teachings, and not be concerned that we're doing anything wrong by treating spiritual figures like Jesus in such a hands-on manner. I believe this is how Neville would want it, and hope my commentary makes you comfortable with this (and if it doesn't, I suggest you read Israel Regardie's excellent profile of Neville, originally published in The Romance of Metaphysics, for more information on Neville's beliefs and teaching methods.)
Neville's ideas are so unusual and effective that I think it's beneficial to hear about them over and over again, from a few different angles, so you can fully grasp their meaning and then happily apply his recommendations in whatever way you would like. So take whatever you find useful in this book, and discard the rest. Don't believe any of what it's telling you just at face value - test it for yourself. That's where the true value of this information lies: in experiencing and finding out what actually works for you, what doesn't, and what can make your life better and easier.
We'll begin with Neville giving brief instructions for how to imagine and receive specific things you want through a deepened sense of relaxation. Then we'll move on to explore the more all-encompassing benefits of this deepened sense of relaxation. We'll go into detail about why you can happily surrender to feelings of relaxation, with no specifics as to what you exactly want, and receive good things in your life with surprising ease. This practice - having zero expectations of what will come from your relaxation except for relaxation itself - will eventually yield significant, tangible results just as surely as if you had imagined receiving specific things. Regardless of how you choose to do it, if you practice feeling relaxed consistently, signs will follow.

Right now, for example, I have a problem I MUST solve ... but I don't know how. In fact, everything I do to solve it seems to make it worse. So Tim's suggestion that I just relax and quit struggling with the darned thing is a huge relief. The sentence that resonates the most with me is that manifestation isn't an *addition* but a *subtraction*. I read a (supposedly true) story about a town in Asia that had a clay buddha in the center of their village. One day it was accidentally cracked and someone noticed a shimmer beneath the clay. Turns out that the buddha statue was made of gold but the priests had hidden the gold under clay so that robbers wouldn't steal it. Whether the story is real or not is irrelevant because Tim and Neville say we are like that. If we quit stressing over our problems, they will be solved easily and without stress and strain:
"Eliminate your mental pain - your stressful rational thinking - and very good things will happen."
Is that true? I don't know but I do know it's a gigantic relief to quit torturing myself with what will happen if I DON'T solve this problem. To change ourselves is hard; to relax is easy. Thank you, Tim!
Great reading that makes one read over and over again and get more insight.
Thank You Neville!!
