Well one day it caught on fire and could have spread quickly to the rest of the boat if I hadn’t responded quickly. When plastic catches on fire you can have a serious problem.
Most people will by the unit under this one that is rated around 40 amps, but if your trolling motor is 70lbs thrust or more you’re taking a real big risk. There are many stories of similar fires using an under rated plug. When I use my 80 thrust trolling motor with this unit the plug doesn’t even get warm and motor performs better. The lower rated plug may have also been the reason several I-Pilot unit went bad on me too. This was not only a good buy it was a smart buy and I know a much safer choice.
There is a faceplate that is optional, and if used, has no gasket to seal to the boat. It has 2 mounting screws, but they only hold the faceplate, and have no mechanical advantage to holding the receptacle to the boat.
What does hold the receptacle is a thin plastic nut that has 1 row of threads in it ...and is so loose that when the jack is pulled out of the receptacle ...the receptacle pulls out of the boat instead.
There is a rubber cap that seals the receptacle when it's not in use. It is too small, so it either pops out, or even if it stays closed, it lets water into the contacts.
The thin gasket designed to keep water out of the plug pulls out of the connector body when 6ga wires are used.
The good: Nice, solid connectors, and good attachment for the wires (allen key even included). Too bad it's overall unusable without significant modification. I stuck a 1.27" diameter disc into the back of the receptacle cover so it actually keeps water out. Still trying to find a solution for the install nut - I saw another review that used teflon tape, but that doesn't seem as robust as I'd like, the nut is just too thin.
As a former user of a twist lock plug for a trolling motor, twist locks are putrefaction compared to this connector. This uses the same type of round-contact plug that is widely accepted as the best choice for high-current applications. Buy this, cast the NEMA knockoffs aside, and win.
Top international reviews
Before purchasing this item, I read all the reviews on Amazon.com.
The two areas of concern centered around the socket cover and the retaining ring/nut.
1) The cover not seating properly in the socket recess Mine seats perfectly
2) The retaining ring/nut not holding the unit tightly. One reviewer described the ring as only having one thread. Mie is just under ½ inch wide, having four threads and holds the unit securely to the face plate. I ensured that the ring would not work itself loose, by dimpling the junction of the face plate and the ring with my soldering gun A rock solid installation.
I consider this item to be of the highest quality, bothe from a design and materials perspective
