In this new Regency romance, a young unwed mother knows she must protect her heart from the charms of her convenient new husband, Lord Torrington. She is not, however, prepared to protect her life.
When the widowed Lord Torrington agreed to spy for the crown, he never planned to impersonate a highwayman, let alone rob the wrong carriage. Stranded on the road with an unconscious young woman, he is forced to propose marriage to protect his identity and her reputation, as well as his dangerous mission.
Trapped not only by her duty to her country, but also by her limited options as an unwed mother, Miss Elizabeth Cantrell and her infant son are whisked away to Middlecrest Abbey by none other than the elder brother of her son’s absent father. There she is met by Torrington’s beautiful grown daughters, a vicious murder, and an urgent hunt for the missing intelligence that could turn the war with France. Meanwhile she must convince everyone that her marriage is a genuine love match if her new husband has any hope of uncovering the enemy.
Determined to keep her son’s true identity a secret, Elizabeth will need to remain one step ahead of her fragile heart, her uncertain future, and the relentless fiend bent on her new family’s ruin.
Early Praise for Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey:
“Murder is far from no one’s thoughts in this delicious new romantic mystery from Abigail Wilson. With scandal dodging every turn of the page, mystery hiding behind the visage of each character, and a romance brewing with an English rake of the worse - and best - sorts, readers will find nothing lacking! I was entranced, mesmerized, addlepated, and not a little bit bewildered as I wandered the halls of Middlecrest Abbey.” (Jaime Jo Wright, author of the Christy Award-winning novel The House on Foster Hill)
“From the very first page, I was enraptured! Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey has intrigue, mystery, and suspense beautifully enhanced by the vulnerability revealed through memorable characters making this story impossible to put down. A must-read recommendation, this story is exactly what makes me love reading!” (Natalie Walters, author of the Harbored Secrets series)
“Suspicion shades the affluent grounds of Middlecrest Abbey in this riveting novel by Abigail Wilson. The artful balance of mystery and romance cleverly blends with the Gothic tones of Regency England. With exquisite prose and a layered plot, Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey is a compelling story not to be missed.” (Rachel Scott McDaniel, award-winning author of Above the Fold)

Abigail does a great job of turning some familiar tropes in new directions or adding locale- or plot-specific threads to them. That is, I've seen marriages of convenience many times. I've even seen heroines married to "criminal" types or heroes falling for women of, shall we say, questionable reputation. However, I had never seen a marriage of convenience enacted in less than twenty-four hours, and to protect espionage, no less. I have seen single mothers and babies out of wedlock, but never in Elizabeth's exact situation and never two or three times over for the same hero (or not, as the case may be). These and other surprises kept my pages turning, so again, bravo.
Elizabeth and Adrian's romance was also off the beaten path for me, partly because of the murder mystery but also because of the romantic moments contained within it. Again, I have seen couples work on mysteries before, but most authors clearly separate romantic threads from suspenseful ones, unless there is a romantic element built in, such as a past love story, a historic home, a key "romantic" object like a locket, and so on. Abigail Wilson, by contrast, lets romance and suspense work in the same scene several times. Those little scenes, like when Adrian and Elizabeth snitch plum tarts or he teaches her billiards, were among my favorites.
I enjoyed all the secondary characters, even those who seemed not to have a big enough role in the story (I'll get to that). Juliana and Phoebe were intriguing, and I appreciated their relationships with Elizabeth, although at their ages I disagreed with Adrian pushing them to think of her as a mother. Elizabeth's conversation with Juliana about 75% through was one of the best moments for the girls, highlighting Elizabeth's heart for others and Juliana's unexpectedly sympathetic nature. I also enjoyed the servants, as they gave realistic portraits of what it might be like to be "downstairs" during a murder mystery. Even Giles, as the murder victim, had his part to play, and it was set up to lend a surprising amount of intrigue.
The spiritual threads are some of the most subtle I've encountered, and I like subtle, so that's saying something. I would have liked a little more spirituality; at times, I felt Masquerade could've been a clean secular romance and no one would've been the wiser. However, I do think Elizabeth and Adrian have learned and grown spiritually from their past sins, and that they have become stronger and more compassionate people. Again, I wish God got more credit, but I can also appreciate the subtlety.
There were some threads I wanted to see more of, such as Adrian's history and relationship with Ewan Hawkins, as well as with Phoebe and Juliana. Once again, Abigail fell (slightly) into the trap of complicated familial and near-familial relations that could take away from the story. Additionally, I felt the espionage thread was rather weak. Not only did we never know the name of the French spy or how and why people were involved with him, American readers will likely not be clear on the ramifications of said spying. Perhaps if Abigail had placed something in an author's note? Perhaps if she had included a family tree, or a bit more family history (because I knew I was missing some Croft Towers details but unwilling to get mired in that book again).
Overall, Abigail's writing continues to improve, and to surprise me. Her latest book for 2021 is on my TBR list, and features a character named Charity, one of my favorite names. :) It also appears to be part of a new series, so I'm eager to see what Abigail does next. In the meantime, Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey is a solid read.
Having said that Ms. Wilson did a very good job of not being over the top like some writers about her beliefs and that allows me to be able to just enjoy the story for its self. So much so that by the end of the book I was hoping Ms. Wilson might bring this awesome cast of great characters to another series.
Brava Ms Wilson.
Lord Torrington is a good man and has agreed to spy for the crown, after receiving news of a carriage that carries secrets, he impersonates a highwayman. After causing a terrible accident, and causing a young unwed mother and her son distress, he offers to marry Miss Elizabeth Cantrell to protect her reputation and his secret as a spy. Elizabeth agrees to the marriage and her and her son Isaac are whisked off to Middlecrest Abbey. What Elizabeth doesn’t reveal to Lord Torrington is that he is the elder brother of her son’s father. Once they arrive she is met by Lord Torrington’s daughters a murder and a French spy.
The mystery was deliciously Gothic, the atmosphere perfectly creepy and the romance a slowly burning with plenty of sparks flying. I couldn’t stop turning pages as new clues were discovered and answers lurked just around the next corner.
