You’d think, oh well, that was over a century ago and we now know about microscopic bugs causing death and disease. But fairly recently, in the 1980s, many people died or had their stomachs removed because of ulcers, thought to be created by stress. A doctor, Barry Marshall, (from Discover Magazine): “Unable to make his case in studies with lab mice (because H. pylori affects only primates) and prohibited from experimenting on people, Marshall grew desperate. Finally, he ran an experiment on the only human patient he could ethically recruit: himself. He took some H. pylori from the gut of an ailing patient, stirred it into a broth, and drank it. As the days passed, he developed gastritis, the precursor to an ulcer: He started vomiting, his breath began to stink, and he felt sick and exhausted. Back in the lab, he biopsied his own gut, culturing H. pylori and proving unequivocally that bacteria were the underlying cause of ulcers.” For this, he won the Nobel Prize.
Fast forward to Mastering Diabetes. These guys, Robbie and Cyrus are both Type 1 diabetic. They along with those who are in their program, have made themselves much more insulin-responsive/sensitive. It’s a story almost unimaginable. There is one person in their program who has had Type 1 diabetes since the age of 3 and is now over 60. His life has been radically changed by eating many times more carbohydrates then what doctors told him to do for decades. Robbie and Cyrus prove it over and over again. But it’s the opposite of what the American Diabetes Association, most doctors, and the media will tell you--that carbs are to be restricted.
Studies going back to the 1920s show that a diet higher in carbohydrates and low in fat/protein leads to greater insulin sensitivity. Drs Kempner, Barnard, McDougall had/have been able to reverse Type 2 diabetes in patients solely by eating a low-fat plant-centric diet.
This book is a magnum opus. This discovery can’t be found though in a pill. Unlike the previous great discoveries, the solution, though simple, requires diligence. I wish Robbie and Cyrus success with this book.
