Editorial Reviews

Review

"In Peirce’s latest comics-novel hybrid, humor abounds throughout the interplay of text, speech-bubble dialogue, and black-and-white illustrations....But Peirce also adds emotional depth to Max’s struggle with a very relatable anxiety: she wrestles with doubts about her skills (“What if I’m a lousy knight?”)." -The Horn Book

"Consistently entertaining and enjoyable." -Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Lincoln Peirce is a New York Times bestselling author and cartoonist. His comic strip Big Nate appears in over 400 newspapers worldwide and online at gocomics.com/bignate. In 2010, he began a series of illustrated novels based on the strip, introducing Nate and his classmates and teachers to a new generation of young readers. In the past seven years, sixteen million Big Nate books have been sold.
The New York Times bestselling Max and the Midknights originated as an unfinished spoof of sword and sorcery tales. Returning to the idea years later, Lincoln rewrote the story around Max, a ten-year-old apprentice troubadour who dreams of becoming a knight.
When he is not writing or drawing, Lincoln enjoys playing ice hockey, doing crossword puzzles, and hosting a weekly radio show devoted to vintage country music. He and his wife, Jessica, have two children and live in Portland, Maine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for middle grade kiddos!
By Kindle Customer on August 1, 2020
This is an adorable book for middle grade kids. The format, which is part text, part graphic novel makes it less overwhelming for many kids, especially those who may not love to read. The graphics also add so much to the story!
Max desperately wants to be a knight. Traveling with her uncle, a troubadour, they come upon some bad luck and head back to her uncle’s home village of Byjovia. Things there are certainly not Heather same since King Conrad is no longer there. Max and her uncle get into a bit of trouble, and Uncle Budrick is taken by the new king Gastley. Max and some helpful new friends embark on an adventure to not only save Uncle Budrick, but also to help Byjovia go back to village that everyone loved!
This was a very quick read. It has humor, adventure, and themes of family and friendship. I also love the fact that Max is a girl, and fights for the right of girls to be able to be knights! This is a definite winner!
